Local Orphanage.

Our company contacted an orphanage and they allowed us to "adopt" a child for Christmas. The children had already made out a Christmas list of what they wanted. (mostly inexpensive items). We all took that list and bought the things on it.

To really make a child's day on Christmas you should experience it. There were tears of joy and happiness all throughout that place! They are real appreciative and it just really made their day.

For thanksgiving you can do the usual thanksgiving baskets and deliver them to needy families personally. You can decorate baskets and stuff them will foods that are traditionally cooked for thanksgiving. And also you can add a gift certificate to a local market so that they can purchase a turkey. Some organizations host turkey drives and have a location in which they announce where they will be handing out turkeys from. Making donations to large organizations is good but too easy. If you want to make a difference and an impact, its great to do these things on your own as a group.

Me ! ME ! I got the answer!

www.anysoldier.com

It a great site.. lets you find soldiers and then you can send them letters or care packages..
it has soldiers in all branches alll locations all over the world not just Iraq.

Christmas is miserable for a soldier overseas even those who have family sendign them things.. but many guys and gals do not have family to send them letters or packages and dont get mail.
Imagine Christmas with not so much as a letter?

These guys are thankful for letters and lkove packages.. they will even often email you if you include an email address with your letter.

The site is free.. sending a box to an APO address means you only pay shipping from your location to New York... The Military takes it from there.

To get Soldiers items by Xmas you will need to ship parcles by November 15th and letters or oversized envelopes by Dec 6th.

You said donate cash.. but if you choose this you can simply use the cash to make the boxes etc.. postage and so on...

We do this.. the guys are great and so happy to get things and hear from us. wehave enjoyed it. Its fun packing up a box to send as well..

Keep in mind... for shipping
Do not mix food and toiletry items in same box.. food will end up smelling like soap..
You can send chocolate now.. chocolate, wax and crayons are ok from Oct -May when its cooler..
Youc an send home made foods but they may not get used as soldiers are told Not to eat homemade foods from folks they dont know.

THey also love pictures of the folks sending to them , drawings from kids and letters too!

Good Luck

Happy Holidays

My favorite charity is the Heifer Project.

"Here’s how Heifer International works:

A typical Heifer project consists of three essential components:

Livestock and other material goods

Training and extension work

Organizational development, which includes planning, management, record keeping, passing on the gift, reporting and evaluation."

It's a great way to feed the hungry, help families gain income, dignity and self reliance. It also helps to build communities that can sustain themselves.

The Salvation Army every year has a Christmas program that enables children who would not otherwise have a Christmas to have one. You may also want to contact a local domestic violence agency in your area, and keep in mind that these children have had their entire lives turned upside down. God bless

Our family also does heifer. The kids look at the catalog and each of them choose the "gift" they would like to give to a family. Instead of giving gifts to each other, they choose amongst themselves which animal to gift to heifer.
