I just bought a 1925 colonial. The house is in beautiful condition. The walls are original plaster and look perfect. It has original wood windows with new storms. I really excited. I have only one problem...The carpet is blue. It's in great shape and I dont want to rip it out. I have a severe dis like for the color as far as interior design goes. I was thinking about using browns to tone it down. Does anyone have any ideas as to what kind of palatte I can use? The carpet is everywhere exspect the kitchen. I lean more toward rustic design, very earthy tones. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I would have to say bye bye to carpet that I really hated. In fact I wouldn't even want to live on someone else's carpet. Lord knows whats been on it, and cleaning really doesn't get rid of germs etc, carpets are a breeding ground for all kinds of stuff.

If you really have to keep it tho, I would recommend, warm cream tones, not yellow, more like butter colors, or a pale taupe, light brown. Not dark brown, it would be way to dark with the blue.

Good Luck

If you don't like it then rip it out. You'll probably spend more money trying to decorate around the carpet and you'll still hate the carpet color. Then when you do get rid of the carpet color you'll have decorations that go with the blue carpet and not the color of carpet you want inside.

Brown and cream contrast well with blue.
Add brown furniture and accent with off white/soft cream with maybe a splash of black. And add a hint of the carpet color in little knick knacks.

Tear it up and put in pergo! It can be expensice but WELL worth it. It looks great no matter how many times you change the room color/style and so easy to clean!

If you have to keep it, try using lots of area rugs and hall runners . In patterns or prints that have the colours you like. good luck!
