First the important thing is to talk to your doctor.
Next, don't take laxatives because your intestines (smooth involuntary muscle) will learn to rely on them.
It is important to increase your fiber intake - soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber (like the white/yellow part of an apple) makes your stool soft, and insoluble fiber (the apple peel) irritates the intestines and stimulates movement (peristalsis).
There are fiber supplements - if you intend to use those be certain to take enough water, otherwise that too can contribute to an obstruction. There are bran cereals that are easy to eat - for example all bran has half a day's fiber in 1/3 cup of cereal. Sprinkle that on a salad instead of bacon bits, mix it into muffins for extra fiber...etc. Increase your intake of vegetables too.
You could end up with a nasty bout of diverticulosis which may also land you in surgery, and you only have so much bowel that can be removed. You could also end up with a colostomy bag.
Best of luck to you.

Well, I work in a GI office, we see lots of people with this. There are several options; the fiber and stool softners are OK, If you start taking products like Citrucel, Metamucil etc. daily, you should see results in about 2-3 months. Another option would be the use of Miralax, 17 grams a day. It is the same stuff as the bowel preps, so it works well. Another option for short term use, is Zelnorm. It is for constipation predominate Irritable bowel syndrome. A product for long term use is Amitiza, 24 mcg. twice a day. Hope this gets you on the right path.

First, if you aren't already seeing a GI doctor you definately should be. I have Crohn's disease and sometimes get constipated really bad, I would recommend drinking plenty of water and take magnesium tablets. I'm not sure it will work for you but it has helped me in the past. A couple years ago I had a particularly bad episode of constipation and phillips didn't do anything but miralax helped a lot, I believe it's a perscription. Just throwing around some ideas for you but you should see a gi doctor if you aren't already.

Considering you are this age, with this history of the problem, one might ask WHAT has your DR recommended? ARE you being treated for this condition and is that treatment being followed, and is it aggressive enough?
There are things you can to do which will aid in your treatment, but I am sure your doctor has told you these...
Plenty of fluids...over hydrate, plenty of bowel moving juices such as prune and apple.
Exercise
Fibre in your diet, plenty of raw veggies
avoidance of cheese, milk products and all the "constipation" foods.
follow your dr's recommendations to the letter, without fail, like religion.
When your dr was notified you were in the ER with a bowel "pile-up" surely he/she knows the treatment is either not being followed or is not aggressive enough. ONLY YOU working closely with your Dr will you overcome this problem.

the best would be prune juice. but it tastes bad. so u can try the dried prunes. u get it cheap in costco.
have more fibre rich food. avoid oily, spicy food.
also go to a specialist to find out the exact cause for ur severe constipation.
i really feel sry for ur condition. i can imagine what u must be going thru. a little bit of constipation makes me go mad. & u have been in the worst condition.
hope this helps. ALL THE BEST...

drink lots of water
increase fiber in your diet or take a fiber suppliment
drink prune juice
take stool softeners ( talk to your doctor first, these are over the counter)
There are prescription laxatives if none of these above things work for you.
I too experience the troubles you are having, sometimes these above things help and sometimes they don't. Best of luck to you!

reading your concerns really struck me because i used to have this problem (12 years ago); chronic constipation and indigestion at the same time but after going in an out of my doctor's office it just went away just like that. I think it was all stressed related, i was single at that time. Goodluck to you and I hope you find something that will work with this chronic problem.

Eat plenty of fiber. Drink a lot of water. You can also try a glass or two of prune juice a day. It doesn't taste good but it helps.
