Fat is energy from food that has not been used by the body. That is where fat comes from. When you use more energy then you put into you with food, then your fat is converted back into energy to be used by the body. This is only meant as a backup, and prolonged reliance on fat stores can be bad for your health.

the body breaks down the fat cells to use as energy. your muscles need certain things in order to function, and a fat cell is the storage unit for those things, the cells don't go anywhere, they just get smaller because there is less fat in them.
