There's a medical procedure that can be performed on the corotid artery (one on either side of the neck) to open the artery up & clean it out, sort of with a scalpal), just like they do on a heart artery. Usually only applies to people age 80+, but can also occur in much younger people. Typically, the artery in question may have to be somethinglike 85% clogged, or higher, before the doctors will elect to recommend this surgery.

Personally, I would look for better sources than yahoo answers. Start with the Mayo clinic, or track down a couple of dozen doctors who specialize in strokes. There are all sorts of ideas about what needs to be done in the weeks and months following a stroke, so time is of the essence.

The procedure is an endarterectomy. An occluded internal or external carotid artery can lead to stroke. Its probably an artery, not a vein, thats occluded. A stroke is caused by the lack of oxygen to the brain. Get it taken care of. Strokes can be prevented.

My mom just went through the same thing last week. After spending a 3 days in the hospital, they let her come home. She still can't use her left hand, and forgets sentences before she even finishes them. One of her scans showed a blocked artery in her neck. I think surgery would fix it, but she's a stubborn lady who don't like surgeries.

And mom, if this happens to be you, I'm sorry, but it's the truth. And stay at home!!!

It is a hard call for a doctor to make nowadays. They sometimes go in and do a scraping which like the other person said other things can result...Prayers...The doctor will let you know of the pros and cons
