Hey man, no doubt you are going to be in Queens, A cab into the city from there is going to run you $30 to $35 bucks. Trust me I've done far too often. Since you are staying in the middle of two subway lines you have a choice between the N/W train and the 7 train. I would take a short cab ride to either or. The N/W is a nice line that can drop you off right at the Southeast cornor of Central Park and 5th ave. 5Th ave bears home to many of the upscale retailers, including F.A.O Swarts (sp). From their you can walk down 5th ave 10 blocks and run into Rocerfeller Center. That's for startes.
If you take the 7 train be ready for a more croweded ride. NO MATTER WAHT TIME OF DAY! The good thing is the 7 will drop you off right smack dab in the middle of the excitment. Just remember, if you get lost, 42nd street is the Center of the universe.
Also check out a magazine called Time Out New York. It will list any and everything you can think of in the city.
I recomend Central Park, Union Square, The West Village, Soho, Look for a nice sit down called Dojos. Hamberger on Peta bread!!
If you like films look up the Angelica and take in an indi flick.
Okay I'm done, this answer is making me home sick.
If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me.

There is no reason to be afraid of Brooklyn. It's just that it may be best not to venture out that far if it's your first time in NYC. There are some "bad" areas but every city has them. Some of the subway lines can be confusing and the street layout is not as simple as in Manhattan. It's easier to get lost and you won't always be able to find a cab. Brooklyn is just as safe as any other city, especially during the day. At night, parts of Brooklyn can become very deserted and it can be somewhat dangerous. Though the "bad" areas become much worse at night.
If for some reason you find yourself in Brooklyn do not step foot in the neighborhoods of East New York or Brownsville. Stay away from Flatbush, Bushwick, Crown Heights, Cypress Hills, and Bedford-Stuyvesant. Even though some of these neighborhoods are getting better there is no reason for you to be there. Same goes for the South Bronx.

I live in NY all my life and it truly depends on what you like as a travelor. Do yo want to be with tourists? or hang out among the people who live in the city?
Since you are by Laguardia airport there is not much in that area and you would have to travel into the city. A street map/guide is essential for peddling about a day or two.
In Queens, you can hang out in Astoria, Long Island City. If you want to venture out to Brooklyn you can go into Downtown brooklyn and take in the sites ie Metrotech center, Juniors cheescake.
Again, it's really up to how you enjoy your vacation. Lonely planet has a great guide and their site is user friendly.

Since you will be near LaGuardia (which is in Queens) try to get a cab OUT of queens into Manhatten, preferably in the center. Time Square is a definite hot spot. Many restaurants, bars, theatre. If you want great nightlife go to the east side -2nd ave. (around 60th st.). A strip of bars along 2nd. For sightseeing go down to battery park where you can get the ferrys to statue or ellis island. Definitely check out the empire state building and rockafeller center (especially if it's around christmas). Have fun. There are so many things to do there. Can't list them all. Try a search online for NYC.

well. please make sure you go to manhattan. or else you will go home with an impression that new york did not impress you, and that new york was not as exciting as you dreamed it would be.
why may i ask, did you book a hotel by the airport??????
i mean, with priceline and all the internet bookings you can do, surely you could have found a hotel in manhattan with a similar price.
i mean, the marriot is great. but you will be at least 45 minutes away from the fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but have fun anyways.

It's been years since I've been to NYC, but....
Go get a copy of the "Unofficial Guide" for NYC----they have a bunch for various cities. These are GREAT----lots of information on offbeat and special things to do, what hotels/restaurants are good value for the money, tips on getting around, saving money, shopping districts, staying safe, etc.
Your library may have a copy, but once you start reading it, suspect you'll want a copy (it's in paperback) to take with you---a very good investment, IMHO.
Have fun on your trip!
