I live in a comunity where chickens run wild and are a protected species. There are 2 hens with about 9 chicks. They seem to flock together. Lately the baby chics will come in my yard, they get in between the pickets or under the fence. The hens will fly over the fence. The hens will dig up my plants and dig holes to feed their chicks bugs. Yesterday, I chased them out with a broom 4 times. They are ruining my plants. I am afraid of being attacked by the hens. I don't want to hurt them ( it is against the law here ). I called The Chicken Lady here and she wants $20 a head to capture them and put them in a safe place. She has a very long waiting list and I don't want to pay for all of the chickens to be captured, there are over 30 in the area. I just want to keep them out of my yard. If anyone has an IDEA, I would love to hear it. I love the chickens, but they are destroying my property.

The best way would probably be to capture and relocate them yourself. The only problem in your case is you have to make sure you do not seperate the adults from the chicks. If you do, and since they are protected, you may be liable for any hurt that comes to the chicks. The legal term for it is "taking".
I would look into the laws of your area first as if they are a protected species, you may not leagally be able to capture them yourself. Where I live, the capture, harrasment, killing, or other harm of a protected species is a felony, and punishable by jail time and/or fines.
A dog may be a good solution should you choose to get one. It will more than likely keep the chickens out of your yard. Again, check into the laws in your area concerning if the dig or cat was to kill one.
It may be worth putting up chciken wire because if you can keep the babies out, the parents may stay out as well.
I wish you luck and hope that you can solve your problem, while at the same time preserving the life of the chickens. They really are only doing what they are supposed to do and do not understand that fences are supposed to be barriers.

As you probably know, a better fence won't help. Chickens do fly-not well but they do, the ones I had to care for would roost in the trees at night. So walking the dogs, had to watch out from being bombarded by poop. And do be careful, they will chase/attack you lol especially with chicks around.
Only thing I can think of, get a cage put some dog food in it, and trap them and relocate them and hope they don't come back. For the chicks, you could try a large net and chase them (these are things I've tried before, the hens/roosters we had ended up being the fighting type, so they were mean). Could try a cat to hopefully persuade them from coming in your yard, but the hens do get mean and might hurt the cat. Otherwise, I'd say just resign yourself to having a bunch of "yard birds", and at least they'll keep the insect population down. Sorry not more help, good luck!
Just curious, where do you live where chickens are protected?

Get a dog and put an invisible fence around your yard so that it doesn't chase them into the street. Cats might also chase them. My cats hunt large squirrels which don't set foot near our bird feeders now! It isn't against the law to own a dog and if it happens to kill one on your property, it's just doing something instinctive. I would suggest a retriever, they hate birds and make wonderful pets. You might look into a retriever mix adult at your local shelter. However, your main reason for getting a dog shouldn't be to keep the chickens out! Also, they carry tons of all natural products to keep pests away from gardens. Check with your local nursery I heard they sell fox and wolf urine (natural predators). Most nurseries are knowledgeable about keeping pests away from property. Also, you could buy a "live trap" yourself and release them far away. Some feed stores even rent them out. A racoon size trap should be adequate. GOOD LUCK! Actually, I think it'd be cute to have a bunch of wild chickens with little babies running around. If you could catch the rooster, you would eliminate further breeding in your area.

I would get a cat and tie it up on a leash out in my front yard. I have one right now in my yard on a tie out 20 foot leash who loves it and keeps my yard clean of unwanted birds. I have even seen my cat chase off a coward pit bull being nosey coming into my yard. LOL! My cat dont put up with much and loves being out on the leash during the day protecting her terf. She also knows climbing trees dont work on a leash so she never even trys climbing them. Shoot shes too worried about sleeping and hiding in my monkey grass LOL!

Secretly feed them corn three or four days in a row somewhere ELSE and they'll hang out there for eternity waiting for the Corn God to reappear.
