It is quite dangerous for cats to go outside in an area by the road, especially if they are not neutered. You might try to use one of those harnesses for small dogs and take them out as you would a dog. They will be nervous at first, but if they are smart, they'll get the idea and enjoy it. They should go out at least once I suppose.

if i were u i would do the following

1. Use a harness or leash to keep your cat in control.
2. Build a good fence in your backyard.
3. Carry a cat kennel to transport your cat from place to place.

Anyhow your cat must NOT roam around the neighborhood unsupervised.

My 3-year-old male cat has been trained to go out on a harness and leash. He just loves it! I feel safe taking him outside only because he has been properly vaccinated and he is on flea and heartworm prevention (which I recommend even for indoor exclusive cats!). We take him out on the leash a few times a week in the warmer months (I'm in Michigan).

My cats are indoor cats as well for safety reasons, but one of them does enjoy going for walks on a leash. We have a harness for her, and she likes to go out and sit in the yard (and eat grass). The other cats enjoy our enclosed deck as a "nearly outdoors" experience. If you want to let your cat experience the outdoors safely, I suggest training them to wear a harness. It won't be like walking a dog (my cat sits and watches more than she walks), but it can be fun and get some strange looks from the neighbors.

My cats are stirctly indoor cats. Outside is just too dangerous and I seen a blinkie the other day that said it best - Better inside and fat than outside and flat!

If your cat is declawed, never take it outside, unless you can leash train it. I suggest trying to leash train your cat. Then you can take it for walks maybe once or twice a day. It won't get hurt if you can keep it on a leash. It may be difficult to leash train if it is an adult.

I don't either: Like you, I have to watch for strays. And there are nutcases locally who have no idea what a break pedal is and who seem to think the road is the Indy race track.

Our two cats never go out for their own safety. Too much danger from cars, other animals and diseases.

Then you are very wise to keep him inside where he is safe.

I have cat fence-in in my back garden so my six cats can go in and out at will though I always bring them in after dark. It was expensive to install and works well with my cats who have a lot of extra space in their territory.

I would never take my cat outside because i don't want her to get ticks.
