Er, aside from the previous get a rise thing (never worked for me dammit) seeing co-workers how they really are and amassing material for a concerted blackmail campaign in the new year. Always turn up an hour or so late so everyone's already had a couple to drink, and pretend to be a bit drunk yourself. The things people tell you... ;)

to go in fancy dress
me a four mates went as the jackson five a few years back it was the best christmas do ever, took about a month to sort out costumes ,(we had them made from a fancy dress shop didnt cost that much) we told everyone it was going to be special but no-one knew until we walked in, and the dj played blame it on the boogie ...fantastic,after that every year became fancy dress for my last xmas do twelve of us went in full top hat and tails, all in green ......magic..... start planning now,and enjoy!

You've got to have the cheesy music.
Have a minibus organised to take people home to stop people sloping off.
Nice food.
Doesn't have to be music all night, you can start with a comic.
Get a nice venue and get everyone pissed and merry.
And then watch the fire works, you'll always get an angry employee wanting to argue about work.
