Linux is a very nice operating system. It's used extensively by businesses as well as hobbyists, both of which also contribute to development. Windows works best for most people because we are stuck with it, but Linux is like saying "if you could give up compatibility in order to design an operating system the right way, what would you make..." In many ways, it's a computer programmer's "dream" system.

True, Linux is less compatible than Windows, but it gets more popular every day, and nowadays you can do stuff with it that you could never do when I started using it. It works on more different kinds of computer than Windows does, and it can even run some Windows apps natively (all Windows apps work if you use a virtual machine, but they run slowly).

Think of Linux as a custom, designer system. It's made by people who are picky and have a lot of preference when it comes to systems. If your needs are like theirs, it will be right for you. If not, then it isn't right for you.

Also, one last important detail is that Linux is Free software. I don't mean to say that you can get it without paying (you can pay people to get it, but that's not required to have it), but actually Linux is software that respects your freedom to use the software for your own needs as well as to adapt it to whatever use you want--there are no legal sanctions against you. Software like Windows is licensed with heavy restrictions on how you are allowed to use it. Most people think this is no big deal, but thousands of people are breaking the law by violating a license they don't even know about!

If you are interested in the politics of Free software, I encourage you to read up on it. If you don't care about the big picture, take it or leave it for what it is.

PS (I put Linux on my girlfriend's laptop, and she absolutely adores it. She is no computer expert, and is also used to Windows, but she has no trouble using it, and is very pleased that her computer runs faster and is more reliable. Just make sure your husband knows FOR SURE what he is doing and understands that Linux is really right for you.)

I recently made the move from Windows to Linux and I love it,and so does my family. Every comp in the house is now running Linux. We use OpenSUSE and Fedora Core.
Linux is much more secure than Windows and is immune to virtually every virus and spyware there is!

Your husband should download some Live CD's and let you play around with it. Live CD's are bootable demos of Linux that let you try it without installing.

Well, Linux is free, and Windows is not. Linux is just as good, and some might say even better than Windows. From an moral point of view, Linux wins hands down.

Linux is good, but just tell him you are used to Microsoft. That is what I have to tell my husband when he wants to change things on my machines. Some times he doesn't even ask, than things get changed and deleted. I wish he would leave my machines alone. He has three of his own to play with. lol

Linux is OK, but Windows OS is just more compatible with different devices and software. I was using an older release of linux, maybe it has gotten up to speed now...I don't know. Still prefer MS...

You are touching a very old problem here. He he.

NO ONE KNOWS THE TRUTH ABOUT THAT. TIME WILL TELL.
Dual boot should be the answer for the moment so you two guys will not fight on such things.

IF I SAY "WINDOWS IS THE BEST!", will I get the "BEST ANSWER" FROM YOU? C'ause you are asking and not your housebad. ;)

Horses for courses I guess. You could get him to dual-boot the PC, then he can use his linux and you can use your Windows :)

it really depends on your preference. windows is prone to viruses, but it is the most popular. i don't know much about lenux, but i know that it doesn't get viruses. mac (personally) is my favorite. they can handle more stuff, and their really fast. the only down side is that they cost a lot. in summary: it really depends on your preference. sorry if this didnt help very much.
