Why are the Katrina victums the only ones who are still being talked about. I understand they went through a lot at that time, but It's Christmas time and here they show up again.. What about us who were also in hurricanes and our houses and jobs got destroyed also, we are still struggling too.. My thing is, it's been a year already, how many more years are we going to have to feel guilty for them, and all these ads saying help them for christmas? I already help children out at Christmas time with toys and gifts, why should I still be seeing these things about Katrina? I know it was horrible. I know people are still suffering and need help. There are others out there too who arent in LA who need help also, and they aren't making ads about it. Just my though. Im over it, honestly. I know people are thinking I am rude.. Well maybe I am. I dont like to feel pressured for over a year to support people. If we wanted to, we would..

go ahead, start bashing.

Sorry, no bashing from me. This year, our community suffered a devastating flood. We were a Federal Disaster Area and had over 100 million in damages. The community immediately set out to repair our own damages. We cleaned out mountains of trash, mud, silt, raw sewage, waste products, etc... No one sat down and said, "Poor me, where is my government check?" We just took care of our own and got on with life.

Today, less than 4 months later, many of our businesses and homes are open and livable. Tell the people of New Orleans to stop sitting around waiting for government handouts and clean up their own messes and renew their own lives.

It was a horrible event yes, it devastated many lives. But the country rallied around the victims. We took many into our homes. I live in TX and we had a lot of refugees living and working here before they could return to their homes.

It's only right to feel bad for these people who have lost everything but I completely understand how people get annoyed with constantly hearing about it.

Like you were saying, other folks have been through hurricanes and such and their talked about maybe for a month then they disappear. It's not really different, those people lost their homes, jobs and maybe even loved ones too but they get less PR.

I'm with ya, why should Katrina victims get special treatment.

I don't think you are being rude at all. Every year there are millions of people in the US, and millions more world wide, who loose their homes and businesses to natural disasters, so Katrina victims aren't the only ones who may still be in need of help.
I am with you; I don't like feeling pressure from outside sources to help those in need from one specific thing. The people that want to help will regardless of what the ads say, and those that can't afford to help shouldn't be made to feel guilty that they aren't giving more. In addition, those ads cost money to run, and part of the money is used to pay the pay for TV time, adverising costs, and a lot of other expenses that aren't directly helping those in need.
My husband and I support local charities that work to help problems in our own area, from children to homeless to disasters victims. We like knowing that our money and support is staying in our community, and not going to God-only-knows-where, where it may end up being used for something other than where it's needed.

No bashing. I can totally see where you're coming from. Truthfully, I think the Government and all these organizations are trying to over-compensate because of all the the controversy (you know, with the racism claims and what not) that emerged after the hurricane...

I wouldn't say that at a dinner party, but I do agree with you. My opinion is that it escalated into a political scandal to the nth degree. While the gov't was trying to sort things out, nothing was happening to the victims.

I don't remember Hurricane Andrew going on for this long.

I don't think you sound rude, you are expressing what you think and being honest. You are right, and yes it was terrible and horrific, but like you have stated, there are other people that are in desperate need of help aswell, what about them.
