Read Acts 1: 12-26 This is when the remaining disciples chose someone to replace Judas. They nominate two men according to specified criteria, prayed and then "cast lots" or voted. The chosen man was Matthias.

Everyone agrees it was Matthias. Not only is apostolic succession historical, it is also biblical, as we have seen. Once an office is established it cannot die with the person, or it is not an office. Jesus established the office of bishop that had to last longer than the lives of the original Apostles, or the Church would have no leadership, no way of correcting heresy, no way of defining developed doctrine (such as the Trinity), and no way of settling disputes.

The gospel message was not written back then. The Apostolic authority that the Church had, to make the decision to elect Matthias did not come about by all of them pulling out a copy of the New Testament. Simply put, the Church produced the bible, the Bible did not produce the Church.

NOWHERE in the entire New Testament does it say that each individual believer could teach himself or anyone else the gospel message. The only way a person can teach the gospel message in the bible was if you were ordained to do so. Simply put, the bible (which had not even been written out yet) went with the office.

When the bible was finally put together at the beginning of the 4rth century, the entire gospel message remained with the office of those who were qualified to teach it. That traditional/biblical reality did not change until the Protestant revolt 1500 years later. Apostolic succession was rejected contrary to the historic, consistent, authoritive Church, and the Bible.

So anyone who rejects apostolic succession cannot be honest about accepting Matthias as a successor to Judas.

Suzanne: you belittle the work of Matthias who was martyred. I don't think that is right. I think God knew they would replace Judas with Matthias and I think that was just fine with God. He also wanted Paul so he chose him in addition. Remember the twelve Apostles represented the twelve tribes of Israel but, Paul was the Apostle for the Gentiles so it is natural then to have thirteen Apostles with that.

The other apostles replaced Judas with Matthias, but Jesus replaced Judas with Paul, who was His "chosen vessel."

Peace.
