Just curious-this is a tendency I have, and sometimes when I date girls who are more similar to me this could come up possibly if things got serious.

The most important thing ALWAYS is to make sure you take care of yourself... and when you're dating someone who also gets depression, they also have to take care of themself first and foremost. A big mistake a lot of people make is thinking they can make someone else happy, or that someone can make them happy. NO. You both have to find your own inner happiness and come to a relationship as a whole person, not expect someone to 'complete' you. People lose themselves when they start to identify themselves in the context of a relationship and in that case, 2 people with depression can have a very fast downward spiral. But if they are both taking care of themselves first, they are better able to be there for each other when one of them needs it. Hope this helps :)

It depends on how in control your partner is over the illness. It could actually be a good thing if she has had depression before since she would then be able to relate to your experiences with depression.

It would definitely be a bad thing if the girl is currently depressed or has constant uncontrollable bouts (manic). This could lead you to become depressed as well.

The bad thing is that you probably won't know if this is the case until well into the relationship. So my advice is to look for love and cross this bridge when you come to it. Hope this helps.

If properly treated I don't see a problem. If she isn't receiving treatment, I'd probably want to stay away.

If things get very serious, and you two get married and have kids, keep in mind that those children will have a history of depression on both sides of the family and you will have to keep an eye out for that.

I think it creates more of an understanding between each other. Depression is a serious illness and if you are with someone who understands that then you can get through those 'bad moments' together.

Not a bad idea as long as you both are getting help and treatment. Don't let depression run your life, get in control of it and live it up. Good luck...

I don't think it's a bad thing. In fact, it may be good. You may be more sympathetic to what your girl friend is experiencing. I think it would be bad if you both were doing nothing about it.

it depends. if you're in the process of getting better and he is getting worse, it might make you fall back into depression. But it can also help because you two can relate and help each other.

I think its good to be with someone that you have things in common with. Mental similaritites can help make a strong realtionship. Its all in how you handle it. :)

No, who better to understand what you're going through than someone who knows it first hand?
