I'm not the valentines day grinch or anything, but do people think to say that you love someone is said so often by so many to so many that the meaning is often lost.

Has the word 'Love' just become a cliche (an example i would draw is 13 year olds who love 'LUV EACH OTHA LOADZ N LOADZ') sorry for the stereotype, but it makes my point a bit clearer

Yes, its flung around too easily these days. I don't expect my husband to tell me he loves me everyday, I expect him to SHOW me. And on those days that he does say it I feel like it means so much more than when you do it automatically at the end of every phone call.

Yes. It is the one word everyone knows but, depending upon ones age and emotional maturity, few of us know the essential meaning of it. It is a word thrown around too often by someone who wants something from someone else. We often hear a celebrity at a concert saying in response to applause, "I love you all. Thank you for being here." The pre-teen and early teens will take that verbatim and for the moment fantasize that their hero "loves" them. Men on the make will utter the word if they must to get what they want. People who manipulate others to get them "in their camp," so to speak, will toss "love" around recklessly. Phony preachers will assure all before him that "God loves you," because he knows that will be the tie that binds us to him. God may indeed love each of us but that is "perfect love," which mere mortals cannot truly understand. Finally, we are bombarded with films, videos, ads, etc. that tout "love" as the be all and end all and at the end of the day we are all loved out. Even though we may not have anyone who truly loves us or that we truly love.
That said, I believe we know when someone special in the family - mothers are the big one - who truly loves us in an unconditional way. And, in the romantic sense, when one finds "true love," we know it unless we live our life as a soap opera where we hang on every word our lust object utters.
And yes, 13-year olds use the word ad naseum because they are too young to understand the concept. Glad I'm not 13 anyore.

I tell people (who I know, i.e. friends and family!) I love them, I think it's no bad thing to say you care about someone. If a bf told me they loved me I'd obviously be pleased but I don't think the words are the be all and end all. It's silly to overemphasise the word 'love' in relationships, actions speak louder than words in this matter. I don't agree with rationing the term so you can only use it occasionally to certain people, I love my friends and don't mind telling them (although maybe this is because I'm quite girly).

Basically, love is a word that is used too often, but some people really mean it when they say it, and some just say it to impress or for no clear reason.

i dated a guy once who abused that word and it became a meaningless word to me because of him. any time he did something or said something wrong or when we are in an disagreement, he thought that by saying the L word, i would automatically forgive him.

remember love is not just a word it is the action between the 2 individuals involved in a commited relationship

It depends on who is using the word love and in what circumstance it is used. I feel that you should never tell someone you love them until you know deep down that you do love them. Love is not word that should be used lightly. It should be backed up with the deep feeling that you feel for the other person
