Hello. I love your question because I used to sell tires! I have heard this one a million times.
Quite simply, purchase what you can afford.
Keep in mind that when you buy tires, you are getting what you paid for.
Lets say you have 1000 dollars to spend on four tires. You could buy the top of the line tires and be wasting a lot of money for somethng you do not need.
Same goes for cheap (politically correct-"inexpensive") tires. If you buy a 40 Dollar tire, thats exactly what you are getting. Do not expect it to last like a 250 Dollar tire. (Am I makin' any sense here?)
As far as brands...just like anything else from clothes to shoes, there's hundreds out there! In many cases you are paying for the brand and not necessarily the product. Many of the larger tire companies own the smaller ones and most consumers don't know it. It's the same company with the same products with different Brand names.
Best tire (opinion!!) are probably Michelins. Experience, not pride speaking here.
Expensive, yes-a little, but if you keep your wheel alignment in check, rotate them regularly and monitor the pressure in them they will last as along as they are warrantied for. Some models warranty for 90,000 miles. You can't call this a cheap tire, they stand behind the warranty too!
BUT Goodyear, Firestone, General, Uniroyal etc all have good products too, but the better product you want, the more it costs.
Best advice to you is call around and get some prices. See what it is gonna cost and see what you want to (or can) spend for your tires. Please don't forget to ask about warranties, mounting and balancing fees, an alignment. They may have quoted you 200 Bucks for 4 tires but when you get the final bill it may be $100 more because they didn't include the mounting and balancing charges in there. Some place charge a disposal fee for your old tires as well. So get TOTAL estimates and don't be shy, ASK questions! Work 'em over on the prices a little (you would be surprised what a tire costs-wholesale!), like a car salesman, make them work for your business.
Depending on what you spend for your tires, most road hazard warranties are worth their weight in gold, consider the option (or ask) when you call around.
One last thing (I know I'm long winded but I get lots of "Best Answers" in here!)
PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT!! Tires are not cheap. Get the most out of them. Have the alignment on your car checked before, or when you get your tires AND KEEP the reciept!
A bad alignment can ruin not one, but two tires at a time! Then you unknowingly rotate them and after while you have four bad tires cause you moved the good ones from the back to the front where they may start wearing incorrectly.
An alignment may cost 50 dollars or so, but consider the cost of $50 now for the alignment to replacing two $50 tires later that didn't even last as long as they should have!
If you have a wear problem with your new tires you can show them your reciept for the alignment, better chance of validating a warranty because you have proof. Same for rotations, even if you did it yourself, make a little log book, keep it in the car, write down the mileage when you rotated them and the date. If you ever have a failure or premature/excessive wear problem and go back to warranty a tire, you have the documentation that they will ask for in order justify the warranty. Documentation here can save you a lot of money! I sold tires I know how the game is played.
No wheel alignment, no rotation history, "Oh, so they wore out really quick, huh? Well I can't help you, and neither will the manufacturer!"
Customers get real mad, but I can't help you if you won't help me help you. Do the alignment, keep the reciepts, record the rotations, you will thank yourself in the long run, no matter what kind of tires you buy. Properly installed and wearing tires are also safer too.

Depending on what type of tire you are looking for you can choose an all season, high performance, performance touring or luxury touring. I would base your pick on your driving needs and where you live. If you don't want to spend too much then go to a Pep Boys or Tires Plus, if available and see what are the deals of the week.
If you have access to a costco or sams or bj's then check them out too because at some places when you buy tires there, they will also mount for less.

Generally, there are two basic choices:
High Speed/Performance or Long tire life.
High Speed/Performance are usually considered "better" because they cost more. They are made with softer, sticker material that gives great performance, but short life.
My experience is some cheaper tires can last much longer.
Of the cheaper tires:
If you plan to keep the car for (or think the car will only last for) another 30,000 miles, don't bother getting 90,000 mile tires. If you think you'll keep the car longer buy tires with a longer warranty.
If they have a COSTCO in your area, that is where I buy my tires. They don't try to sell you a bunch of stuff you don't need.

Go to a goodyear store, or your local Walmart. It depends on where you live what season tire you buy or if you buy an all season tire. Goodyear, Cooper, and Firestone are my picks and I buy tires every week for cars on my lot. Walmart can recommend a good type of tire based on your area, and they have great prices. Good Luck!
