I was told by my vet that it's because they lack something in their diet. I changed dog food and they never ate it again.

These answers are telling you how to get rid of the poo. What you should be asking is why they are eating their waste? 1.) Check up time! I'm not there to actually evaluate the impasse. I recommend that you see the local vet. FECES is a major problem and it is unsanitary! You want to correct this behavior immediately! 2. What have you been feeding your dog? Have you been feeding it human food with the lack of it's proper nutrition? If a dog has a lack of nutrition it will often eat it's own feces because of the poor quality it's recieving. The smell of the waste can also give off the same aroma of the food. 3. Behavioral problem: "It is important for dog owners to know that this behavior is normal for a mother dog with pups," adds Dr. Eurell. Newborn pups must learn to urinate and defecate. The mother teaches the pups by licking their bottoms. The pups respond to this "tickle" by urinating and defecating. The mother then consumes the pups' excrement, which serves two protective purposes: it keeps the den area clean and it removes smells that could attract a predator. Some pups learn this behavior from their mothers and will stimulate themselves and consume their own feces. Most pups stop by the time they are weaned." 4. Bordem, anxiety or attention seeking can also cause this. How to quickly prevent this habbit, well it seems you already know. Either putting some pineapple or pumpkin will achieve a bitter taste. Also disposing and reinforcing the word "No" but keep being patient and firm. Bare in mind that because your dog is eating it's own feeces you are at risk of digestive problems and sickness. Once that dog eats it's own poop and from there licks your hand, touches furniture, or is anywhere near your food it is now causing illness to your entire home such upset stomach. This desperately needs attention ASAP. Correct this impasse not for just for your dog but your own well being.

I think its part of their instinct. It goes back to hiding your tracks or in this case your droppings and not wanting other dogs to know you have been there. I think the more a dog is associated with an area that instinct just goes away.

There is some kind of pill you can give them that makes their poop taste nasty.. Which I would think that it already would... how ever I would call a vet and see if they could give you the name of the pill

It has to do with nutrition, and having a lack of certain vitamins in the food they are being given.

You can stop it by sprinkling meat tenderizer on their food (suggested by vet). They like the taste going in, but no so much on the other end.

my two dogs never did that...
perhaps it's their behaviour....or because of certain things that happen on them...
did you ever beat them when they poop?
if so..they are afraid that you might again...that's why they eat their poop..
if not..mabye there is undigested food in their poop that is or smell edible to them..so they eat it...try changing their food product...mabye it will help
i never have that problem mabye because they ate rice
