I taught my son that way before he started school, I think that should be the parents job first...then school should reinforce it!

Schools still do teach those safety issues. However when you were little, you probably had parents that spent the time to reinforce the lessons you learned at school. More and more children are spending less and less time with parents. We are living in an age now when so many people feel a sense of entitlement - thinking that they deserve everything they want regardless of how it affects other people. There's not enough space on this forum to go into that concept since there are so many places and people that share the blame. So, don't solely blame schools for the lack of respect, cooperation, and decency in many children today.

There is so much education for so many things that this may seem to be put on the back burner. All kids in our school district take a bus to school, even the kids who live across the street from the school. I believe this lesson should begin with a parent as well as many, many other lessons teaching the child.

Because the school systems are too busy teaching multiplication and division to second graders.
Actually, there should be something that the kids learn from their parents besides how to shoot a gun, steal a car, hold up a convenience store, etc. Don't you think?

It's true my son knows the stop, look and listen, look left and right song but they don't teach them to cross the street even trfic lights green go, red stop, and yellow heild right, but I guess It is up to the parents to teach them those basic things for survival in the present setting. They do want to be at faulght if some thing happens to our children and blame us parents instead.

Schools should reinforce the ideas of safety but parents should have taught their children how to cross a street before sending them to school. As well as teaching them some manners.

Well, parents can do the same thing, but I think it is all the 'new' people coming into this country who think the world has to stop for them! My son knows to stop look & listen because I taught him!
Last night, on my way thru town, this 'new', not sure if they are here legally, girl & her 3 year old kid, mom on the phone, jay walked in town, right in front of a cop! I had to slam on my brakes, to stop because she just walked out without even looking!
Stoopid people.....

If your child is young and has to cross the street, it is up to the parent to cross them. The schools can't teach the kids everything, some things the parents should teach.

Schools do teach safety. It is up to the parents to teach it first, before kindergarten, and to reinforce it. Parents need to support education in general. The attitude of students gets in the way of teaching any subject. Where do they learn the attitude? Home and TV.

Schools try their best but kids will be kids. Instead of blaming the schools though, I think you need to blame the parents for not teaching family and life values. Teachers today have enough laid on them without blaming them for what should be learned at home.
