If you are just beginning then get a cheap one from brother it's less than $100.00. It has a setting for heavier fabric. You would be better off ruining that one as opposed to a real expensive one. Save the expensive one for when you have more experience.

I have a Singer like they use in schools. It's built heavier with 2 belts to take the punishment of kids learning to sew. I use my to sew vinyl. It can sew 3 or 4 layers with a heavy needle. I think mind cost about $200. You'll have to ask around at sewing maching dealers for a "School Model" sewing machine.

I have a Brother sewing machine. It works great. I have used it to make 5-6 layer dresses. It is pretty easy to use, and does a good job.
