It depends. If it's an LCD screen then, measured diagonally, it should be just under 8 inches. If it's a CRT then you lose more, maybe an inch, because of the housing.

A 7 inch screen is the same (roughly) as a 4 X 6 photo, and a 5X7 photo is almost a 9 inch screen. So the 8 inch screen will look bigger than a 4X6 but a bit smaller than a 5x7 photo.

It's small. The size refers to the diagonal measurement of the screen.
