As he's so far away why not buy him a star so he can look at it every night and think of you.

That's a tough one to answer, but I'll do my best to advise...
When buying a gift, especially for someone who is far away, I've found it's best to buy a gift that is used daily. Not a decoration, but something they need, or would want to use every day. This provides the opportunity to smile and think of you and your friendship on a daily basis and perhaps they won't feel as far away from you.
I can't really say what item you should get since I don't know how much money you have to spend and to whom the gift is intended, and what the person does daily (work or hobbies). For females I think that jewelery boxes with perhaps a music box are a timeless and useful item. For men, wrist or pocket watches have been common items.
If you buy a knife, make sure that your friend gives you a penny for the knife (Even though it's a gift). The superstition is that if they don't "buy" the knife, it will cut or sever the relationship.
Other things to consider, if they have a long walk or commute, an MP3 player or radio might be nice. More romantic ideas might be a large scented candle that reminds you both of something.
If they live in a rainy place you might consider an umbrella or goloshes. Somethings might not seem romantic (if the relationship is such) but you'd often be surprised at how much a useful item will bring you closer together.
If you want more ideas, feel free to write me.

Well, I guess that depends on the type of the relationship and the age of the people involved in the relationship. Airline tickets are a good idea if you are intimately involved. The tickets work well even if you are just platonic friends. This also depends on your budget of course. So with out knowing age of the people, type of relationship, and budget involved, it is hard to give you a great gift idea, except for showing up on the doorstep and saying Hi -- I'm here.

Yea, I don't believe in long distance relationships-someone is always cheating--so no gift ideas from me unless breaking up is a gift?

If you want it to be great, it has to be personal, and no one can really help you with that. However!
1) Do you two have any inside jokes/stories? Something that ties into that might be nice. (ie: sending a dozen muffins to the man who calls you Muffin, or something like that...)
2) If you two have been together for a while, you can send something like jewelry (money clip, ring, etc from Tiffany's, for example).
3) If you're really serious, send a train/bus/plane ticket. Or Fed-Ex yourself, baby!
Good luck!

For a guy? A nice sweatshirt of his favorite football team or something else you can personalize. I wouldn't give him something that requires him to write or visit you. That's really a gift for yourself. Personalize it. Try to think of something HE'D really like so he'd know you thought about him. It might surprise him and let him know you trust him.

A VOIP, Voice over internet protocol. So you can call each other cheaper… Like Vonage, broadvoice or sunrocket. Or a gift certificate is good for a guy.
