All military contracts are for 8 years. this can be broken up into chunks of Active Duty, reserves and IRR.

Currently the shortest AD contract is 15 months, that starts after all training is completed(boot camp, a and C schools). this is followed by 24 months in the Reserves( and no getting out of it.. at this time, NCS Sailors may not extend on AD). Aftre that, they may continue in the Reserves or go to Individual Ready reserve( no drilling, no commitmment, but may still be recalled to AD)

As for education: AD sailors have the opportuntiy to sign up for the GI Bill.. for a contribution of $1200( payable over 12 months) you will be able to access up to $30,000(and sometimes more) for college, that can be used within ten years of separating from AD. There is also Tuition assistance that you can utilize while on AD.. 16 credits per year. You may also get credit for any schools you attend, You may CLEP(test) out of some classes and gain credit that way. There are PACE courses on NKO that can also be tarnsferred over for college credit.

How easily you can do any of these things, hwoever, will depend on your duties. You military obligation will always come first, and there will be deployments .

If you want to be a chef, look into the CS rating. Culinary Specialist. Yes, you are a glorified short order cook, BUT you will learn the basics as well as possibly have the opportunity to go to Culinary School on the Navy's dime.

My husband is in the army and we checked into the navy for a branch of service i feel that the navy is the most education based branch in the militaryif you are really serious about schooling and the armed services the navy is the way to go. The GI bill will pay for most any schooling youwant but if you are serious talk to a local recruitor and he or she will be able to answer all of your questions a sign on bonus may offset any college costs you may incurr
