What does Paranoid mean exactly?

I mentioned before that I was in a place like a cult where some of them were described as paranoid is it the same as suffering mental illness?

The symptoms of paranoia are an ongoing fear that everyone is 'out to get you' (simple answer). People who feel that their friends, co-workers, neighbors are against them are said to be paranoid. There is a type of schizophrenia that is called paranoid schizophrenia because those symptoms are displayed but as to the actual cause it is unknown and yes these symptoms are considered a mental illness but then again even mental illness is such a vacuous open-ended diagnoses.
