I frequent this bakery in this department store and they sell this product which I would like to purchase but everytime I do come around, the 'best before' date would always be 'that day'. Does that mean that it's expired already, or that it should be consumed before the day's actually over?

A grocery store worker once told me that foods are good UP TO 2 wks past expiration date. As far as baked goods, could get stale but still edible if you dunk them. Unless there is a cream filling. Also another thing to look for is the fuzzies. Then definately throw away.

It means exactly what it says=the quality (flavor, texture, etc.) is at it's best if consumed before the date shown. It does not mean it cannot be consumed after that date. Also keep in mind that most products have a built in safety margin where the item is still edible after the date by a day or two. For most baked goods the concern is that it will be stale and not quite as palatable but not spoiled.

It really depends on the type of product you would be consuming. In supermarkets, however, if the expiration date is a month away, it's time to restock and the product that is a month away from expiration is either taken down or sold at a really low price.

It should be safe to consume the product on the expiration date. though i wouldn't expect it to taste as nice.

I would stay away from dairy products on their expiration date if i were you. ((:

Throw them out. You don't use rotten bananas in bread. You use over ripe, but not rotten. When the banana peel gets a few dark spots, just a few and when peeled the banana looks fine, but it's a bit too soft, that is when it is right for mashing and using in a bread recipe. The fruit you are describing should be thrown away or put into the compost pile or composter.

It's ok to eat, but may taste fresher if eaten before the date.It should be marked at a cheaper price if sold
after the date.

You can eat it but the quality of the product will probably be poor. Just ask the baker when do they expect to be making more.

Depends what kind of food it is. They put date on it to cover their butt.
Lost of things are good a long time after that date.

Baked goods can last for weeks and eaten safely...unless they have a custard filling, then eat it by the exp. date.
