My mum has been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year and had a mastectomy. I needed to know a lot of information in order to be able to help her. I found these websites very useful:

www.breastcancer.org
www.getbcfacts.com

These sites are very informative and they will give you the information you need.

Thank God, now days treatment of BC has advanced beyond imagination.

You dont "know" you have breast cancer until a proper medical diagnosis is made; examine your breasts regularly, if a lump is found, it may, or more often, may not be cancer. A biopsy will need to be done to see if cancerous cells are present.
Sometimes breast cancer can occur without a lump being evident: that is why regular mamograms are important if you are an older female or breast cancer has occured in your family.

And guys, that applies to you too, as males can and do, get breast cancer!

If you have found a lump or in ANY WAY think you have breast cancer you must IMMEDIATELY ring your Dr and get an appointment. If they say they are busy and give you an appointment a long way off you MUST INSIST on seeing someone - explain what your concerns are. My Mum had breast cancer and her Dr didn't think it was anything too serious and didn't refer her to the hospital as a high priority case - she was lucky but was operated on a week after being seen at the hospital (she'd waited eight weeks from Dr to hospital, for which her Dr later apologised). Get help IMMEDIATELY PLEASE. Good luck.

Stop, think and address your fears.

You need to get a mammagram after you are seen by your doctor, ob/gyn. They do an office check and then send you by referral to get a mammagram, and mine is yearly.
The results are given to the doctor's office, and they say either ok, or not ok, and can send you for another.

This year, they forced me to have a second mammagram after the first one because they needed more information. Now they have a site from my second mammagram that they will "watch", and it's called a baseline. If it was bad, they would order an MRI or more intensive tests.

Only your doctor can tell you what symtoms you may have, and they differ for each person.

Use your intuition which is working...and telling you that something is not right.....please get an exam, as it may save your life. Call your doc after you read this!

I hope you don't but if you or anyone else you know ever do get diagnosed check this new procedure out. It's supposed to reduce the time radiation is given and be just as beneficial.
