There are many treatments for glaucoma but it depends on the type of glaucoma you have and whether you caught it in time or not.
There is a filtering system in the front of your eye.
In the front of the eye we produce a certain amount of fluid for the filtering system which is exchanged during the filtering process. . . new fluid in and old fluid out.
When that filtering system fails to work properly, the fliud tends to back up thereby creating pressure in the eye which affects the optic nerve.
In some cases laser can be used to open up those filtering openings and allow old fluid to seep out as it should. But there again it depends on the type of glaucoma and if it was diagnosed early enough.
Drops help to encourage the filtering system to work properly.
Yes there are many drops to treat glaucoma, treatment that helps to keep the glaucoma under control but you will have to visit your Opthalmologist on a regular basis to have the pressure in your eyes checked and there may have to be many changes in glaucoma eye drops until they find one that works best for you.
Yes Xalatan is considered more often when the glaucoma is hardest to control and one of it's side effects is that it can eventually turn blue eyed people into brown eyed people. . only a superficial side effect.
Pilocarpine is also another high powered glaucoma drop that sometimes is used in conjunction with other glaucoma drops.
Glaucoma drops burn upon using them and will make your pupil pin point.
Even at that as far as I know there is still the possibility of going blind.
Look at your family history as glacoma is considered to be passed through the family tree.
ANY adult over the age of 40 should have their eyes tested to see if they could possibly have glaucoma because glaucoma is called the Thief of Vision as there are no symptoms and in the rare instance that a patient does feel pressure in their eyes, the pressure is so high that damage has already occurred.
Normal pressure in the eye is usually between 17-21 anything higher than 21 is considered suspect.

My mother had glaucoma and she used Xalatan and another eye drop ( can't remember the name) for many years. Her glaucoma was controlled using these eye drops. She would get an eye exam every six months to check the pressure in her eye and usually everything was fine. Mind you, perhaps my mom had a less agressive type of glaucoma than others, but from my experience, she did well using the drops.

There are different kinds of glaucoma and different stages of the disease. You should really ask an ophthalmologist (MD). An optometrist would not be able to answer this question about medication.
