I am getting a kitten Friday and I have her bowls all set, however where they'll be sitting it will be on carpet. I want to make sure the bowls won't tip over, any suggestions of what I could set them on that will ensure they won't tip- I was thinking about one of those mats but I didn't think that would really help either, thank you!!!

You should buy a glass cutting board to put your bowls on. Some have pretty patterns too, or you could get clear. That way the bowls will be sturdy and any food/water will fall on the board instead of your carpet. Imagine all the bacteria and stuff that will form if you get food stuck in your carpet, gross.

Cats prefer to drink out of glass bowls. I have like 6 little clear glass bowls with a tiny pedastal on the bottom that I use for my cat (Only use one at a time of course). They are supposed to be used to put a couple scoops of icecream in. I have 6 bowls so she will always have a clean drinking bowl everyday, in case I am lazy and don't want to handwash her current bowl.

Do some research on cat nutrition. You will be surprised to learn that food from grocery stores are garbage. They are filled with by-products and grains that aren't good for cats, poor nutrition. Buy high-quality cat food from a pet store. It will save you in vet bills in the long run, and extend kittie's life!! Take a look at these articles:

Hi Sweetpeaberry,

Congratulations on your new kitten.
WalMart and pet food stores, have tip proof food and water bowls. They are wide at the base, and narrower at the top, making it impossible to tip over.

I think it would be a wise investment as you will never have a tipped bowl even when kitty gets bigger. I would place them on a small throw rug or something just to keep anything off the carpet.

Enjoy your new kitten,

Darryl S.

I keep my cats bowls on a serving tray. I picked it up at Kmart one year and it is perfect for keeping her feeding area contained and easy to clean as well. No mess or spills beyond the tray.

Also... bowls should be wide enough so that the cats whiskers are not pressing against the bowls sides and causing discomfort while eating or drinking.

For the water, put it in a heavy bowl. For cats we have had that were "tippers" we put water in an eight inch glass cake pan. The mats do not help at all.

Get a mat or something to cover the carpet with. Kittens are messy, but as they grow older, it will not be a problem.

I had bowls for my cat and as he grew older, he would dip his paws in the water. When it got dirty, he would purposely tip it over so that we could give him clean water. I started putting his water bowl in a shallow bin so that he could still get to it but if he tipped it, it wouldn't get all over the floor.

I have my catfood and water bowls on top of a tray with 1" raised sides. My cat is messy about his food, but never spills the water.
