AmEx Black cards don t mean anything now. There is a credit limit set internally at AmEx based on your payment history, available resources, etc. You do get special services, but you can get those with other credit cards.

The biggest drawback is the huge fees AmEx charges you to carry that little Black card in your wallet. If I remember the last amount was around $5,000/year. Sure, you ve got concierge services, but you can get those with a Visa Signature card or a MasterCard World card.

You don t know who has the best credit card by looking at it anymore like it used to be. You ll know how rich they are when the merchant tries to run a purchase through and see if it declines or not. I could have a Visa Signature card with more features, buying power, etc., than an AmEx Black card, but you wouldn t know it by looking at it!

For me, it's the one that will pay *me* the most cash back for my spending. The more of the merchant fees I can *take back* from the credit card company, the better.

And since, by federal law, merchants have to charge the same amount for an item when a customer is paying by credit card as when they are paying with cash/check, you might as well reclaim as much of the merchant fees as possible. Because you know the merchant is just passing along those fees to all their customers in the price of the products they're selling.

You can't apply for American Express Black. AMEX has to personally invite you to join the distinguished ranks of the select few.

That is how exclusive it is.
