depends on what kind of info you're looking for. If it's your own number and you need a duplicate card or something, try www.ssa.gov or contact your nearest social security office. If you're trying to get info about someone else's number, is illegal unless you have something like a power of attorney.

If you want to know whether someone has died, check the social security death index. That is public information.
