What has the size of the crowd got to do with the quality of the football? Scottish football was in a much better state in the 70's than it is now or has been for many years. I saw Celtic play Leeds Utd in the European Cup at Hampden around 1971 and there was a crowd of around 130,000 but those teams were much better than some of the rubbish that is dished up today.

Don't forget though that Celtic (and Rangers) are just two clubs in the SPL. Look at the attendances at Falkirk and St Mirren last weekend - the sort of crowds that Oxford United are getting in the non-league Conference. There is no strength in depth in the SPL - remember the days of the old First Division when Aberdeen, Dundee United, Dundee etc did well in Europe as well as Celtic and Rangers. Those were the days when the Scottish national team were successful as well and I am sure the two are connected. Best of luck against Benfica.

The first guy said that Newcastle played to over 100,000 at home. That's strange because according to their official Website, their record attendance is 68,386 v Chelsea, 3rd September, season 1930 (First Division)

Are you saying the official website is wrong?

Brechin v Montrose in a cup game.
Over six hundred paying customers and maybe half that sneaking in through the hedge.
Pretty good for a wee place.
