Hello. I am going to give you some information that you need to read VERY carefully about your dog in heat. I am not trying to scare you, i am just giving you the cold hard facts. I have tears running down my face nightly. WHY? Because there is an illness female dogs can get, called "Pyometra", and it is very fatal. I just lost my dog 9 days ago from it. She was a healthy, vibrant, very playful 7 year old shih-tzu, and she would come into her heat cycle every so often, and this last time, it killed her. The disease is an infection of the uterus, where there is bacteria, i am talking none other than E. Coli bacteria, and it got into her system, and caused a cataclysmic infection that shut her down and killed her. Everyone thinks of spaying as to prevent pregnancy. Yes, that's very smart to do, since there are sooo many needless deaths at shelters across the country from pet overpopulation. But pyometra is the most brutal dog killer!! I am a train wreck! I can't sleep without tranquilizers, i'm crying at home, at work, everywhere. There is also the possibility that your dog can get breast cancer later in life, just by not spaying her.
I am giving you some advice, and anyone else reading this. Don't take chances. If you love your dog, then please get her spayed. I am hating life for not getting my dog spayed. I had no idea about pyometra, never heard of it, never heard of the breast cancer link, either. I know about spaying to prevent an even bigger strain on the shelters, but she never got out of the yard, or the house, unless i watched her. So she had zero chances of ever getting pregnant.
Please read what i'm saying, and keep the dog you love from becomming a statistic.
I'm an animal lover, and a dog lover. I thank you for reading this, because i don't wanna see anyone go through what i've been through the past 9 days.
thanks for reading this..

My ***** lyla has just come out of her second season, shes 15months old. She usually bleeds for 10 - 11 days. Fortuntely I have laminate floors so cleaning up after her is easy. I tried those panties for dogs to no avail too. I usually sleep with lyla but I set up a nice comfy spot in the corner of my bedroom when shes in season and she sleeps there. It takes her a bit of persuading but she does sleep there in the end. Good luck
