well in most states unless it is a felony or you are from another state the police will give you what they call a NTA which is called a notice to appear, it is like getting arrested, but it is a summons to go to court, and the judge takes it from there, they may have you talk to the DA before you see a judge. To help you. If you have stole a lot in previous situations you are sqrewed if your a first time offender they may go easy.

It depends on the value of how much you actually steal. The more money/property you take the more serious the crime. You will be detained and arrested and then taken to the police station and booked. The police will issue a bond allowing you to pay to get out of jail on a promise to appear in court usually the next day or in big cities within the month. You will go before a judge and he or she will determine your sentence. If you have a clean record you will probably not go to jail but get community service and pay a fine. If you steal over $1000 more of less its a felony and you may face jail time and a fine.

Do you have to shoplift to live?
Shoplifting is stealing and the person doing it has to be punished one way or another.
Like, who is the actress who has to do community service?

It's like confessing to a sin. It's only hard to believe that even if you get away with it, you'll eventually pay back. I just wonder why they don't teach "Thou shall not steal" and "Thou shall not kill" in Israel.
