Im about to install a tv shelve unit,how do i make sure that the studs are behind the wall where i want to put it up?Do i need any special device and how much will it cost me if so (UK)?

You can use a "stud finder" it's an battery operated devise that actually finds the stud by density. Or....if your good enough you can tap gently on the wall with a hammer and go by sound, then use a nail, than try the spot. Make sure your right or your going to have a Telly in your lap.

make sure you nail/screw the shelve in to a stud in the wall or it will fall when you put your TV on it To find a stud the cheep way nock on the wall in till it sounds different or buy a stud finder. some times i use a compass the needle on the compass is a magnet run the campus a long the wall when the needle points at the wall there is some thing metal in the wall and most likely it is the stud. good luck

if there is an electrical box on the wall take the plate off and look inside the box is usually attached to a stud measure over 16 inches on center tap a small finish nail in the wall to see if the stud is ther if not try 24 on center the 16 and 24 are inches (usa method) also try measuring from acorner out same amount 16 or 24

Try tapping on the wall. The wall will sound hollow until you hit the stud. Or, buy a stud finer, they're inexpensive.
