Opinion:
It is funny, but the truth is, we did win the war, captured Sadam and devistated his political threat.... problem is, we didn't do what the people expected in Iraq, and that is to be the 'new tough guy with the big stick.' Now we are dealing with the void in leadership. Let's call it what it is.
We (the US) have no intention of occupying the country of Iraq, and, being who we are, we never will. Iraq is a nation of old style tribe rulership (the guy with the biggest stick runs the show). After wiping out Sadam, the people expected a new leader to take over... not democratic elections.... the majority of the people just don't (right now) to understand the long term concept of peaceful exchange of power.
They wanted the next dictator to take over, like the coup and countercoups they knew so well in 1963. This creates a sense of confusion among a people who see weakness in our (the US) political philosophy and, once again, strength in the side of extremist who propose ultimate rule (something they are use too). Now we are trying to stay off a civil war with rival factions and terrorists (internal and external imports) trying to take control and gain support and all while hoping the elections are fair. That's a tall order we are in the middle of filling.
The best we can do, at this point in the game, is support the results of their elections and pursue a stable government the world can stomach. Their election, most likely, will result with the guy with the biggest stick (who forces the most number of people to vote for him) taking control. We just need to hope that this guy is not a thug (yeah right... big stick?), interested in picking fights with his neighbors, gasing his people with a stock pile of toxins and poisons, and sanctioning rape rooms..... like that last one...
So the question I think you really mean to ask is: When will Iraq have a new leader (with a big stick) that the world can stomach so our boys can come home? In time, I think so.

They are not sure as of now what they are fighting for. There for they do not know what they can call victory. Are they going to win? nobody knows. Are they going to lose. In every way. They have lost already a lot. America lost its credibility. Lost around 3000 soldiers ( official version ) and many times that number seriously injured. Economy in shambles. Already spent a huge amount on Iraq and don't know when it will end. Can't get out without losing face. Meanwhile the losses mount.
A war started on lots of lies. Now when it is going to end??
there are winners too. Who got all the lucrative contracts in Iraq??

the war in iraq is not a game that is to be "won". Wars are declared to fight for somethig or to get protection from something.
Yes, america is going to "win" the war because they have screwed iraq pretty bad (though america's economy and image have been affected but not to the same extent as iraq). They have killed more people in iraq than they have lost their own.

In a military sense I don't think we can win like we did in WWII.
BUT WE HAVE TO TRY. Ever witness a boxing match between two good fighters? Even the "loser" is a winner because he fought his heart out. So too with life, kid. All you (America) can do is try your best. Anything short of that and you're a loser from the jump.

You need to define win. Will be topple Saddam? Yup! Will we forever rid the world of terrorist? Nope. If the only good terrorist is a dead terrorist, have we killed a lot? Yep. Will Iraq ever be a safe place for its citizens to live?? Now thats a good question.

Unfortunately I think this war is not winnable.
you can't win when the country you are trying to help(Iraq) has to many people that don't want our help.If they wanted our help they would not be killing our soldiers.with road side bombs and suicide bombers.I think it is time our soldiers come home.

It will happen the same thing that happened in Vietnam. The US troops will run out like coward dogs, afraid of death hopping to return with their families alive.

Yes and no, as soon as the Iraqi army takes power back and they recall the western troops (the yes part), some new dictator will move back in and the whole thing will start again (the no part).

Define "win". Will they kill more ppl than they lose? Yes, but if everyone is dead what do you do after that?
