Great question.
My husband came up with this theory about why Satan is called the Prince of the power of the air.....
The airwaves...radio, TV. When we think about how the media is always stirring up trouble between different groups of people, it does make you wonder...

To say that Satan is the "prince of the power of the air" is to signify that in some way he rules over the world and the people therein..... But I've always thought it was 'The Prince of Darkness' too!

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Satan is called the "prince of the power of the air" in Ephesians 2:2. I see it as just a poetic way of speaking of satan. Check out the full context in Eph 2:1-5.
These websites put together a list of other names for satan. http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Rampart/7131/SatName.html http://www.biblestudygames.com/biblestudies/satannames.htm

THE PRINCE OF THE POWER OF THE AIR (Eph. 2:2; 6:12): As such, he is the leader of the evil angels and prince over this vast host (army) of subordinates (demons) which carry out his orders. He rules with tyrannical power.

The idea of a an actual personification of evil has existed in all world religions since the beginning of time. This mythic figure has had many names and is associated with what ever frightens people. The connection to the air is rare, but probably traces its origins to the ancient Indo-European sky god that later came to be identified with the Hebrew war god, Yahweh.

Air is all about us. Air is in the mind and about the ears. When you hear that satan is called the prince of the air, it is the "higher places" whereby satan can influence the mind....
Through the ear, that small voice, is the inner heart infiltrated.... That higher place of the mind......
Notice, too, that it is a spirit..... and it only works on the "children" of them who disobey the righteous cause.....
