Also It seems connected that the font size and the font style boxes in the top tool bar now turn grey as they do for a protected document.

Uninstall and reinstall your MS Office.
It looks like some files have gone corrupt.
Also check for updates and apply them every week, not just of XP but for MS Office as well.
If you didn't have the latest updates, this kind of thing could've happened, because they were addressing vulnerablities in MS Office.

Are you using a trial version of office?? If yes, then due to expiration of the trial period, the software goes into RFM or reduced functionality mode where you can to very little with your docs.

u didn tel which office u using..
u might be havin several probs lik dll files needed to run 'thesaurus' of microsoft has corrupted. try reinstalling the MS office or if u kno since when it has tht prob, try system restore point of tht date.
