Retirement does not mean you cannot work anymore, but that you can choose to work when you feel like, and you can make your pick. I don't believe motherhood finishes only when you are dead. Your kids need to have a life of their own, when they are grown up their lives is their business. You can become their friend and as such, you can choose to help them from time to time. With your husband you can start a new life, cultivating the relationship in other dimensions. When your work is done educating your children, it is time to move on. It their time to work out their lives. For that to be possible, you have to give new meaning to YOUR life, pursue other fields of activities, cultivate whatever was left behind, your old and abandoned interests. If you don't want to get old in the mind very quickly, keep your mind busy with creative and challenging things. If you focus only on your kids, you will feel lonely eventually, for they will follow their lives. If you were a good mother, they won't need you but for their love for you.

Jean I changed reply after your clarification that you were not at all serious about your question.
Let me tell you There are many people for whom this same question would be a desparate call for help.
So what do I infer when a housewife wants retirement from her job prematurely?? Either she is so unhappy or she is not enjoying her job, it is very simple for me.
As it turn out in your case you were neither.
Though I agree as someone said here - Being a wife and a mother is a blessing and not a job. In future, either you decide to never post half baked questions, think them through first or be prepared for receive whatever answers we give you here with humility, we do it very sincerely as a friend in need.
Gosh I wasted so time due to your insincereity.

when the children are financially, spiritually and emotionally independent.????It's hard to say really coz kids go through a range of different experiences in their early adulthood.I myself suffered from depression last year and needed my family's support.I had just turned 21 and was in another country.I had to return home but I was so happy to be taken care of.I think mothers will always be mothers. They're needed for advise and loving care always.

You know a mothers job is never done. Just when you think you have finished your job, all your kids have grown up and moved on, then come the grand kids and it starts all over again. You should be able to get to a certain age and say "That's my job done, You're on your own now kids" But it's not that simple is it? I think we wish it all was!

Life itself is retirement for such a person. Being a mother and a wife is not a job. You cannot retire from being a mother. You can retire from being a wife by not being a wife.
