You shouldn't have but it would be very difficult not to. I do hope it was a punch rather than a slap.
If he's hanging out with a group of you, what are the other guys up to when he kicks off with his abuse? They shouldn't just be standing on the sidelines; they should be backing you up.
If he's not with your crowd but just walking up to you especially to be abusive then definitely go to the police.
Take care of yourself and remember Nil illigitimi carborundum.

I really don't agree with violence, but I understand that you were provoked by the man.

What on earth are you doing associating anywhere near a person like this who has racist issues?

I hope this never happens again, but if it does just give the person in question a cold look and, if you need to, say something along the lines of 'I think far too much of myself to stand here and listen to you' and then move away from them.

Fortunately, on this occasion, you have hit a man who doesn't hit back at women. I hope he now has the sense to stop harassing you and this incident is completely done with.

If it made you feel better yes! He was totally in the bloody wrong calling you an ape??!! What a tit, I would have probably hit him as well! Whats done is done, you cannot change it, no point dwelling on it. Anyway, he deserved it saying something like that to you.

No, you shouldn't have hit him although I know that was what you felt and that was your first reaction. I'm sure it would've been alot of peoples reaction! He is ignorant and made a stupid comment and two wrongs don't make a right. By hitting him, it showed your ignorance. (not literally calling you ignorant) but folks like that, I don't pay no attention to, and just let them go on in their ignorant little world. Karma is a mutha, and it will come back on him ten times as how he put it out there.

The sensible answer would be to revel in the knowledge that he is a narrow-minded racist, and he has a brain the size of a gnat's chuff.

I probably would have hit him myself, and also castrated him to ensure that he could not spread his ignorance and hatred to the next generation - Sounds like one guy that really needs taking out of the gene pool!

He sounds like he totally deserved punishing. But, then, his own stupid bigotry places him in a mental cage far smaller than anything we confine apes in!

No, hitting people is wrong, and losing your cool to that extent is letting him win in a sense. But I have a good sense of exactly how you must have felt.

I can well understand that you would want to hit such an ignorant and insulting racist but in the future don't resort to hitting. Avoid him completely and if he continues, call the police that you are being harassed.

Na, you should have left it. He's a pratt who ended up getting the better of you and you seem like a decent person.
Still, bet for a short while after you felt justified.

No. Not really lady like. Let me do it next time. Actually violence shows a lack of intelligence. There use to be this old wise saying...sticks and stones may break my bones etc.

No, it was a mistake, because it confirms the stereotype of a black person as lacking in self-control, and unable to deal objectively with arguments (I'm assuming that you are black here from your picture).
