i walk quite a bit and am a bit overweight, my calfs' are getting out of control!

Check for water retention, though this sounds unlikely.

Are you walking effectively, that is raising a sweat, power walking - at least 40-60 minutes a day?

And it would be good to swim and cycle instead on alternate days.

Of course, you have decreased and modified food intake, begun dieting, stopped eating between sensible meals and, or, adopted a vegetarian diet as well?

Cycle, preferably with hills, off road. Do about 30 - 40 miles a week. That should be enough to tone, without adding too much muscle. Try to average about 12 -15 mph, if poss.
