Why do people fail to understand the difference of the layman's term "theory" and the scientific term "theory"?
There is indeed a difference.

Listen, the word theory, when applied in a technical sense (such as science) does not mean "guess". The true definition of theory is the accepted conclusion drawn from compiled evidence. The earth traveling around the sun is a theory (and the bible says its the other way around BTW), gravity is a theory...and yet fundys seem ok with them.
The word that comes closest to "guess" in scientific terms is "hypothesis". It means a statement or question that has no evidence or research to support it, at the present time.
See, you learned something today: that the church has been twisting the FACTS that support, and prove THEORIES for centuries. The proper term for this is PROPAGANDA, or manipulating the facts to support a singular point of view.
Ah, why am I wasting my breath...you'll just put your head back in the sand anyway. The world has evolved into a beautiful place, if you'd just see it for what it is.

Maybe because of psychological effects. When theories are taught in school, especially in geometry, they are being proved and deemed as a "law" or something. Because of that, students think that theories are something that cannot be contradicted. Just like a fact. I suppose they consider a fact more obvious than a theory but technically the same.

Some people misuse theory and fact to justify their opinions.
Fact is an actuality, something that is completed or exists. Evidence and proof establish fact.
Theory is often a collection of facts that together lead to unproven assumptions about their relationship to some phenomena.
When we are too lazy to establish fact we state an opinion or make a claim and call it fact.

Maybe because the school systems teach theories as facts and do not teach the kids how all theories need to be constantly tested and reevaluated.

If they like the theory, they want to believe it. It becomes a fact to them, even if it's not fact to the rest of humanity.
