The Lord never commanded us to read the scriptures back to back. The Bible is not a simple story book that is to be read from beginning until the end. Rather, it is a collection of books gathered by the people of God written by the authors inspired by the Holy Spirit. Usually when a person starts to read the bible from the start they become bored as the time goes by. It is better to start with the Gospels, preferably from Mark because it is deemed as the simplest Gospel. Starting with the Gospels gives you a better understanding of the promises of the Old Testament. But if you insist, It is better to read the Bible a couple of chapters each day, remembering to look for secondary resources like video documentaries/commentaries and historical artifacts to explain what's happening in that particular scene. This will help you be more interested and eager in searching for God's Word. Hope this answer helped you. Thank you and God bless..

I understand your frustrations, i read the bible from cover to cover (at the age of 25 BTW) It is the most in-comprehensive work of fiction i have ever come across... to say that is the word of god or the inspired word of god is an absolute insult to any supernatural god that may or may not exist.
Assuming you are not a "committed" christian then i would seek more fulfilling paths than reading that particular book. - Meditation is one path, it will surely clear all those non-sensical fables from your mind anyway.
Sorry, the "Lord" is not a good story teller as this "Lord" concept was created by man kind himself - who, as we all know is fallible and far from perfect... and at times (especially 2000 years ago) was a particularly bad story teller.
*IF* the bible was the work of god, then EVERY PERSON ON THIS GLOBE WOULD POSSESS A COPY, but alas, 5/6 of the worlds population dont care who jesus is. Breaking down the stats thats: 5 BILLION PEOPLE dont believe in jesus and 1 BILLION PEOPLE who do believe in jesus - who do you think is right? - There is no contest...
Also if there was one TRUE "god" then the entire globe would have aligned to that one god... the population of the globe would be in awe of this god... we would know for real that "god" existed and was real... but, no... alas, there are people relying on an old book to prop up their "faith" .... a world gone mad (well 1/6 of the world!)
All the best, for now and the future :-)

Having read the King James Bible, I've noticed two things about it as a book. First, the Victorian era English used is remarkably well cadenced. Some considerable writing talent was used for that, I think.
However, the unfortunate fact is that, as a book, the Bible stinks. The original writing was inferior, about fifth-rate in terms of modern fantasy literature, and not even a Shakespeare could make a decent novel from any of it.
Where Bible tales are concerned, the movies are definitely better than the books, mainly because of the cool special effects afforded by "Industrial Light & Magic" technology.

I had a hard time at first, but I found that if I read a chapter from the Old Testament, then a chapter from the New Testament daily, it does flow. Genesis and Numbers can be difficult to get through, but keep trying. The deeper you get into the chapters, the more facinating the Word becomes, and before you know it, you will have read the entire Bible, and it is awesome!

Just keep reading prayerfully and faithfully. The Holy Spirit will help you. I had the same experience, a desert experience at times when I did this. Don't worry about how it flows, just be patient and let God work through the Bible into your heart.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal the Truth of God Word to you.

it may not be you but the bible you are reading. try this one http://etext.virginia.edu/rsv.browse.html its the RSV. i had the same problem i couldn't make heads or tales out of the king James bible. remember that the bibles we have now are translations and are not written the way the original bible is. some words are substituted because they do not have a English word that would be the same as the original language

Growing up I read my Bible from beginning to end 5 times in a row for a competition in our youth group. Now, I read what it is the Lord guides me to for the day. I can better understand His message to me personally that way.

You need to read and learn all of it so the Holy Spirit can use it in situations to bring up scriptures in your mind that you might need at that moment. I am amazed sometimes the scriptures that come to my mind when I need them and I know it's the Holy Spirit and not me. I don't remember that good. Keep plodding through it. It will be worth it.
