It could be a hardware issue for which you need to get to a qualified tech. but before that you could try a few things if it is software.
1. Disk Cleanup
Go to Accessories-->System Tools--> Disk Cleanup
Select C Drive and then check all the check marks you see except "compress old files" and click Ok. Wait for it to finish.
2. Spyware Detection
Download Ad-aware from downloads.com, update and run the software... first in smart detection (restart if required) and then full system scan.
3. Virus Detection
Download Grisoft's AVG system from "http://free.grisoft.com" and Install, Update then run the software for a full system scan.
If all the above steps don't help you then you need to backup your data and take to a qualified technician for further inspection.
Hope the above steps solve your problem.

Does this happen right after you start up while using a particular application? There could be various reasons.
Try starting your system in a safe mode. Here's how:
Switch on the cpu.
As soon as the monitor starts with the windows logo, start repeatedly pressing the F8 button on the keyboard.
you will get a menu with options.
Choose "last known good configuration", hit enter and see what happens.
