It helps you to comunicate better with persons:when you travell, you're a bussinesman, you want to find more about other countries, and so on.Besides, learning a second or even a third, forth language is one way of encreesing your IQ,of developing your brain, memory, keeping your mind "fit" and healthy(studies have revealed that persons with a good brain or mind capacity have less chances of suffering from Alzheimer's disease).
Knowing a second language helps you to expand your horizons.
You should never be satisfyed with what you already know. You should try to permanently challenge your mind,to have greater performancess,to be one step in front of others and first of all,to surpass yourself!

I think for English or Spanish speaking countries it is not really necessary to learn a second language..Most of the business is in English, and there are so many Spanish speaking countries.
But for small countries such as Holland, Belgium, or let's say Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, there aren't any other countries speaking the same languages.., So people need to learn at least English. Most Asian countries are learning English as a second language. Now for American and European countries I suggest to study Chinese, because in China there's a big market.
Other reason to study a 2nd, 3rd or even a 4th language is travelling...So you can communicate and mix with the locals.

Learning a new language helps us to have access to cultures we were previously not able to communicate with. This means that we can talk with new people and read/listen to materials from that culture.
Learning a new language can help you to get around when you are traveling and learning from the world.
Learning a new language can help you to learn more about language itself and how it works. It teaches you that language is an arbitrary symbolic system, for example.
Learning a new language can help you see your own language and culture in a new light, because you are aware of how other languages and cultures do things. This gives you more choices about how you want to conduct your personal lifestyle.
Learning a new language can help you fulfill graduation requirements in both high school and college.
Learning a new language can help you to get a better job in the future, because you can communicate with customers/clients who use that language.

Living in Europe for 3 years was easier a lot of times because I could communicate in the local language, Greece, Germany, France. Spent a few days in glorious Italy but did not learn the language yet.

I'm English and apparently we are very lazy when it comes to learning other languages as English is one of the the most common languages. I now live in Spain and yes I've learnt Spanish, it's been fun to learn and the Spanish people have helped me whenever I have made an error, laughing with me rather than at me, they also seem to appreciate the effort I have made.
It really annoys me as I live in a tourist area to hear people and I'm afraid to say, quite often English speaking who expect the locals to understand what they are saying and on occasion they can be quite rude. how hard is it to just learn the basics when visiting another country, hello, my name is, thank you, e.t.c.
A lot of my neighbours are in fact German and have lived here for 10 or more years yet do not speak Spanish as they can survive with basic English, I feel this is a shame as it is important to keep the history and language of a country alive. When my partner and I have kids I will ensure from day one that my partner speaks to them only in Spanish and I will do the same in English this can only be a benefit for them.

Its both fun and practical to learn a second language. There are levels of fluency and even learning the basics is interesting. Overseas work (e.g., United Nations) is a rewarding experience. We're from Asia and English is already our second language. We spent a year in Kenya (kishwahili) and five years in France (french), so we've sort of learned a third and a fourth language already. For example, you will be happy to note that many English words have French origins so it's really easy for English native speakers to learn it. So have fun and enjoy.

Are you asking us to tell you why you are learning a second language? Can't answer that one.
I don't think many people would understand me if I hadn't learned a 2nd and a 3rd language as only 300.000 people speak my language.
Now I regret not learning more languages when I was younger, it gets harder the older you get.

There are a number of possible reasons. You might want to communicate with people who speak that language. You might want to study or work in that language. You might want to read things in that language. You might enjoy learning languages like me!

There are many reasons why people learn a second (or third) language.
The three main reasons are:
learning it due to where they live (example: you are from America, but you have to move to Spain, so you start learning spanish.)
Some learn it to gain an advantage in the work force
some will learn because of intrest
