"Is sex just something we need to rise above to become more spiritually enlightened? "
Sex is the most natural thing on this earth... sex was here long before any religious books stated associating it with "sin"
Since ditching god and jesus in favour of a more realisitic life, i have found my eyes opened wider than ever before... looking at the world throught the tinted specticles of religion gives you a blinkered view of things which i very much doubt will "spiritually enlighten you"
All the best either way :-)
LOL - read "Alea" above... to quote "to tell you the truth sex seems too be one of humans major downfalls" ...
ahh hello McFly - without sex there would be no humans ... h hahahha a hah ah hh a LOL :-) you just made my day - thank you :-)

yes and no.
Sex for the purpose of having children that you can take care of and help along the way to spiritual enlightment can be part of your own spiritual enlightment.
But if you're just having sex to get your rocks off then, yeah, its a hindrance. Best to be married and have sex with that person only, even if you mostly do it for fun, its better than just being 'loose'. =)
Re. Maximus laughing above... yes, Sex is perfectly natural - in fact - essential to material life, which includes human life, but the question is about asking about 'spiritual life/enlightenment' not material life. if you consider (and obviously Maximus doesn't) that human life is meant for rising above animal life and into transcendence, then sex can be a great downfall. But it doesnt have to be.

I'd say sex is part of spiritual enlightenment. Joining together like that with a person you deeply love is a spiritual experience all of its own.

Sex is actually a gift from G*d, A natural part and action of life and living. It's a part of all living things.
If a person believes in 'spirit' then there is nothing to "rise above"

No. Sex is a fun, natural thing that all humans are designed to do. Don't let 'spirituality' take away something so fabulous.
But these are words from a horny Atheist.
Haha I just read Alea's too. Funny ****.

Sex doesn't happen in a vacuum, we have emotions and feelings that need to be expressed as well as physical needs to fulfil, sex is what being human is about. To rise above sex you would need a good appreciation of it and lot's of sexual experience previously otherwise you never rose to it let alone above it.

Every thing has been written in our scriptures about the ultimate truth. VedaVyasa, Kapila, Buddha and others have all elaborated the truth of life in their own ways time to time keeping in view the average understanding powers of the common people. As I feel, the ultimate truth to realize is "who am I? I am not the body as we keep saying "my body, my head, my face, my legs, my hands, etc. etc.. Who is this in us who repeatedly says the word "'My". It is the soul which speaks "my body, my hands, my face etc. We are the (Jeevatma) which is just a small part (ansh) of that omnipresent, omnipotent "Supreme Energy" whom we call God. We are here to realize the ultimate truth that we are not the "doer". It is the Supreme Power which does everything. We are just the tools in HIS hands. Having realized that we are not the "doers", we would be able to renounce all our expectations for the outcomes of our actions. We would easily surrender all our deeds/actions to the God. And this way we would be able to get out of the purview of the "Theory of Karma" and hence would be able to be out of the vicious circle of life and death (reincarnation). This is the ultimate achievement for any human being. To realize this Ultimate truth, we will have to (a) connect with the Creator or our true inner selves. (c) sense the presence of a greater force or wisdom,(d) find purpose beyond this world etc. This what all the great seers like Veda Vyas, Budha, Kapil, Sai Baba have propagated throughout their lives.

yes we should overcome sex. many people today have problems with their marriage and they get divorce because the *spark* is gone, and most of the time they are talking about sex.many people confuse sex with love, and it isn't. premarital and sex in genral cause too many problems, alot of people really don't anything about their partners because they are too busy being stuck in the bedroom. sex isn't a game and should be taken serious
