kingreef.... buddhists don't believe in God. Gautama Buddha is a sage (wise person spreading message of his own words, not God, not given by God)

Buddhism is the second oldest religion in the world, Hinduism is the first.

"The Buddha" was originally Hindu as was his parents. Hindus believe in Many Many gods.

In his thirties, "The Buddha" left his palace of royalty and went out to be taught by many teachers which had reach types of enlightment.
And he was further educated this way.
He desired to obtain an understanding of why there is so much suffering in the world. He contemplating this. And came up with his teachings which are still around and widely practiced throughout the entire world today.

Buddhism is not a religion, it is a philosophy. Religion is about relating to God and the goal of Buddhism is to reach Nirvana, where ther are no relationships. Nirvana is a state where a perosn is merged with the energy or effulgence coming from the person of God. Its Gods spiritual energy but its not God the energetic. In this state of nirvana a person is not aware of their own identity as a person / an induvidual nor can they be aware of God's personality - therefore they cannot share a loving relationship with Him and for this reason I do not follow Buddhsim. I want to love God.

I do believe however that Lord Buddha is in in fact a form of God - His goal when he appeared on earth was to get the people at that time to stop sacrificing animals in the name of the scripture for their own sense pleasure. Buddha taught ahimsa - non violence - and this is great. People can benefit a lot by following ahimsa. Everything Buddha taught is correct but its not everything. Theres more to life than this. He doesnt teach people to love God and this is the goal of religion. Even if a person achives nirvana, is perfect in Buddhism, they will still be wanting love, and love is only possible when you ahve a sense of self and other.

Buddhism is also very hard to follow in everyday life. A lot of people say they are buddhist but its a token name for most.

Buddhism is the best religion because it avoids metaphysical questions entirely and focuses on results of spiritual growth through right action.( and mediatation)
not too many Buddhist wars to speak of.
Although some tibetans did put up a fight for their temples etc when China came in. this was very unbuddhist. But tibetan buddhists have always been different from most others.

Sakina12,
My pastor knew a lot of things. He would teach little snippets about Buddhism and Hunduism, and Islam. He was a Philosophies of Education professor graduated out of Stanford University. And he had studied all these religions extensively.

Basically, Buddists had meetings periodically. And at some point they decided that Budda was a diety. So they deified him, even though he denied the nautre of divinity.

So Buddhism should be more of a way of thinking, a way of life, not a way of worship.

I think it's a beautiful religion. There are many principles in Buddhism that I follow. Like nirvana, and reincarnation. It's very peaceful and non-judgmental.
