Why do some high schools finish on the 1st of December?

Why do some school finish on the 1st of December and other schools finish later

I'm in Australia, and year 11's finish around that date (16yr olds) educationally speaking, I have no idea, apart from thinking it's some sort of reprieve for teachers and a slap for parents!
