Confidence. We need to know they have total faith in the doctor, hospital and its capability to heal us. Empathy. The ability to not look grossed out, even when it really is disgusting. When you are in hospital it is overwhelming and a little scary, a good hospital nurse, inspires confidence that everything will be fine on 'her watch'.

Empathy, patience ,and a good working knowledge of medicine. Organization helps a lot too. I have been a nurse for 30 years and am often frustrated by the lack of knowledge or caring that some of my colleagues show to their clients. I feel that whatever job I do should be done to the best of my ability. There is no shame in admitting you are not sure of how to deal with a problem and having to do the research to learn how. I have been at my current job for 21 years and I tell the new staff that there are situations that arise everyday that I have never dealt with. Nursing is a learning experience every single day.

A good nurse is able to anticipate her patients needs before the patient asks. I'm talking about the basics here.
Genuine kindness, caring and compassion go a long way too.
