Honestly, there was no particular reason. No peer pressure, no stress, NOTHING. I started smoking at 19. I was living with my grandmother who has smoked for most of her life. She never encouraged me one way or the other. But one day I picked up one of her cigarettes and "huffed" on it while unlit. I wasn't really even curious. I just did it for no reason at all. I wasn't thinking any particular thought... I just did it. It was a menthol cigarette. I liked the taste of the menthol and decided to see what it tasted like while lit. So I lit it, smoked it, and enjoyed it.

People are always saying that peer pressure causes people to smoke, which is probably the case with some people. But in reality there are people who are just like me... People who just "up and did it" one day. I continue to smoke because I enjoy it and because I crave it. The craving is hard to explain. For me, it's a sensation that I get on the roof of my mouth. It's the most intense after I have eaten and while drinking any kind of beverage (especially soda for some reason). I'm not debating the fact that folks become addicted to cigarettes, however I do feel that the level of addiction isn't as high as people would like us to believe and that it varies depending upon the individual. If it were so difficult to "kick the habit" there wouldn't be so many people who do so quite successfully.

I have quit smoking before. I quit a couple of times for a few months. And I didn't go back due to an uncontrollable addiction. I didn't gain weight due to quitting. I didn't become moody. I didn't go through withdrawls. There was nothing to indicate that I was suffering from quitting something that I was addicted to. The fact of the matter is that I missed smoking. I missed the taste of menthol in my mouth. I missed satisfying my craving after a delicious meal. I missed holding a cigarette between my fingers. Therefore I started smoking again.

I'm also not debating the fact that smoking isn't healthy. But I also believe that the health effects of smoking, like the level of addiction, are greatly exaggerated. For instance, it is claimed that smoking increases a female's chances of getting facial hair (or more facial hair). This is a problem that I've had ever since I was about 11 years old, and smoking hasn't made it any worse. Oh, and what is it that makes people think that, if a smoker gets cancer, the cancer was definitely caused by the smoking? It can happen but sheesh... smoking may not have necessarily been the cause. Why do non-smokers get cancer? Duh.

I continue to smoke because I love to smoke. And I will probably die with a cigarette in my hand, not because I am addicted but rather because I love to light up.

I started about 5 years ago, which is considered old to start smoking, because I had a major break up and now I can't stop because I think I'm not ready to let go of that event even though I've done a pretty good job in getting on with my life. I guess some things take more time than expected..I'm planning to quit though...

I started experimenting with smoking when I was 14 but have smoked every day since I was 18 and I continue because I enjoy it. It calms me nerves and keeps me pleasant oh and in case no one's told you this before...smoking is addictive.

I didn't start smoking until after I'd graduated highschool and don't plan to quit anytime soon. I'm 24.

I first smoked when I was 12. I don't know why... I have a strong curious side that gets the best of me. I just decided one day that I wanted to try to do it. But then after a few, I became addicted.

I started smoking as a teen because I thought it made me look sophisticated and mature.

It took me 26 years to stop finally. Tonight was my anniversary of stopping. It was so scary because I was so hooked that I was afraid I would never be able to quit. And I hated that because I don't like being controlled by anyone or anything outside of myself.

Glad you reminded me! I'm so grateful not to have that addiction anymore.

Not exactly sure why I started but I think it had something to do with boredom and/or the desire to do something different. Thank God almighty I was delivered of this disgusting habit in September of 1978 after listening to a sermon on TV by Fred Price. Don't remember too much of what he said but I haven't smoked from that time till now. Thank-you Jesus!!!!!

being at a party...didn't want to do any drugs....so a friend said just smoke these New Port cause it gives you a buzz if you take a big puff,,,hold...then take a drink of cooler...it did...so when I drank...i would buy Ciggies to get that heavy buzz...well i got addicted to the Nicotine..and 14 years later i still smoke...even without the drinks...I have tried to quit but it is so hard. I take care of myself in every other way...to be healthy...but the smoking is going to kill me. I wish the government would force the tobacco companies to help people that want to quit...hence they found the tobacco Co. negligent on putting addictive ingredients that they didn't state in the production and manufacturing of the Ciggies in the first place...but hey they pay the GOV billions in taxes o let them slowly kill people around the world....But all in all..i have no one to blame but myself....I hope i can quit soon...i hate it...because it's going to kill me one day...as it has to many others.

More addicting than heroin my f****** ***! One hit of heroin and you're a goner... terribly addicted and severe withdrawals if you try to quit. Where did you read that s***? A comic book?

If you wanna quit, you'll quit. If you don't, you won't. Both of my parents quit cold turkey and haven't touched a ciggie in over 20 years. I, on the other hand, choose to keep smoking ... 15 years and still puffing.

It's a choice. Get over it.
