I don't believe in god, so obviously I don't believe God commands people to do anything at all. But what do we do when people claim that God has commanded them to do terrible things? Or when they claim that their "faith" demands that they do terrible things. If they are basing their beliefs and resultant behaviors on faith, how can we possibly talk them out of them? Maybe faith isn't such a good thing? What do you think?

Faith is a terrible thing.

Xians demand we respect their 'faith', BUT... if we do, then we have to equally respect the Muslims faith, the Hindus faith, the Jain's faith etc as all are equivalent and equally deserving of respect, if we choose to respect one, we choose to respect all. Yet those groups each fervently believe things that are contradictory and mutually exclusive. They CAN"T all be true.

See, faith is an intangible indefinable unobjectifiable thing. Faith is where all are usual senses and tests of what is real...smell taste sight reason....are sidestepped. Faith DEMANDS that it be treated as a special case. Just because....no other reason.

Moderates will argue when an extremist does something horrible...."he's twisted the faith, that isn't what we believe"

Except that how are we to tell? Faith is faith, Red is red.
There simply is no objective way to compare the faith of the moderate from the faith of the extremist. Or the faith of the Zionist extremist with a Pentecostals snake handler. It is ALL just faith.

Faith is a terrible thing

I have two scriptures worthy of your consideration here!
Psalm119:165 says that Abundant peace, belongs to those loving your[God's] Law, And for them there is no stumbling block

and Romans12:18 tells us to be peaceable with all men! As you can see, these, show that God does not encourage people to be evil, only, satan, does that,God wants people to be at peace together. The terrible things you talk about of people claiming their faith demands, that is misplaced, faith, and not the faith of the true God, if it truly was from God it would be in harmony with his Word the Bible and since it's not, then it is not from God, but instead it is from the counterfeit god satan the devil! As is anything that is out of harmony with God's Word the Bible!
There is nothing wrong with faith that is true, but so called False faith is a problem. Faith in the true God's Word, has a very positive effect on peoples life, closely following God's word the Bible does not produce evil, in fact the exact opposite is true, it produces peace love and happiness!
Therefore when people say that God has commanded them to do terrible things it is not the true God they are listening to He would never command such things be done!

I think because God is love, he does not order hate. There are evil demons and spirits that take control of a person. They reside in them. Spirituality just as common sense takes time to grow. It is also an experience on a daily basis. Those who have hardness of heart cling to empty air and cold ground without any faith. In the last day you will know the whole truth whether you want to or not.

Terrible things? You mean like the Cursades that killed so many in the Middleast becasue they were;nt practicing the same kind of Christianity that was being done in europe? YOU mena the Spanish Inquisition that used torture to try and convert Jews, Muslims and infidels? You mean the Witch Trials where hundres of people were jailed, torutred and killed becasue they were accused of being witches? You mean the current "War on Terror" that is nothing more thatn an excuse to Kill NON-Christians? You mean ther conversions of northern Europe in the first millenium where in one place (the city of UPPSALA in SWEEDEN,) where 4,500 men women and CHILDREN were put to death because they refused to convert to the christian religion?

Are THOSE the kind of terrible things you are referring to?

Christians are the ONLY ones that try to use their religion to justify such heinous acts. the problem is'nt with religion, or with faith....but with Christianity....it should not be allowed outside of the Middle East where it began...and it should be sent back there...along with its adherants....THEN the rest of the world could get back to living the RIGHT way....

God does. For example: in the Bible is told how He pressed Abraham to sacrifice his son. As he sees Abraham is willing to do so, He lets him replace the son for a goat. But still: what a way to put someone to the test. Dictators like Stalin and Pol Pot had the same tricks.

Religious leaders can manipulate believers into doing terrible things and psychotics hear God telling them to do terrible things often it seems, they believe it's so anyway.

I am sorry that you do not believe in God. He believes in you.
A terrible thing to you may not be to someone else.
The 10 Commandments are God's Law.
That should speak for itself.
(BTW its not "thou shalt not kill" but, "thou shalt not commit murder" ~ big difference.)
