I have a bachelor of music performance(hons) in voice. I sing opera and pop music in Australia.

Beautiful singing is a combination of having a naturally beautiful voice - and the ability to WIELD it beautifully. You may be able to develop what is considered a "good technique" but if your natural tone is not considered "pleasant" by the majority of listeners, then you probably won't get anywhere, and some teachers may not be willing to invest their time in you. It's harsh but true.
You need an instinctive intelligence to know how to control your voice yourself AND to be able to respond to technique suggestions during singing lessons and after them when you practice alone. Consistently beautiful singing requires a nice tone and regular practice to keep the singing muscles (breathing and throat functions) fit and healthy. And as for music, you can either sing in pitch or you can't - and some lucky few people have what they call "perfect pitch" - the ability to sing a specific note (for example "A") without needing to hear it from another instrument. In early lessons, teachers don't listen for perfection - they listen for POTENTIAL. So even if your technique is bad or non-existent, as long as you have a nice tone (voice), and you seem intelligent, it is worth pursuing lessons to find out your capabilities. I hope this helps you. Best wishes.

yes it is possible to develop a beautiful voice, however you wont become a star without inborn talent. there are tons of people with wonderful voices, but stars aren't just singers. a star is an entertainer. Barry Manilow has an OK voice, but he has stage presence, and can control the mood of a crowd. all star singers are also good actors. how else can someone sing a song about a baby dying and not break down? get into theater!

It's true that some people are born absolutely tone deaf. For them there is no hope. Luckily that is only a small fraction of the population. Singing is a skill, a learned skill, the same as tying your shoes or typing. True, some people are better typists than others, but then, some are better singers than others. Do you see where I am going with this?

Hi, master of music here (literally - I have a masters and have been teaching voice and singing for 13 yrs. Yes, it is possible, absolutely! But you have to be extremely dedicated to learning and growing; you must be completely focused on it and not put off practicing. You have to work on your own, doing exercieses, vocalises, diction training: technique! Read, record yourself, get a fab. teacher. The most important aspect is your teacher. Be wise about whom you chose and listen to. Many "teachers" don't know what they are doing. Be careful, be beautiful! You can do it, JF

Oh, talent helps a lot, but you really can improve splendidly with the correct voice coaching. Even people born with beautiful voices can benefit from singing classes. It developes your vocal range and volume, and really good coaching can improve and even cure a tone-deaf ear!

Yes it does, taking classes helps you understanding how to sing (techniques). Singing is like any other skill, you can learn but there's no guarantee you will be good in performing. There is so much more when going to stage.
