People have faith when reasons fail. If there were good reasons for believing in what people put faith in, what would they need faith for? And if faith is enough, then why do people talk sometimes about evidence for beliefs they say they have faith in? Isn't faith the crutch people fall back on when they can't make a good argument?

I have a problem with any belief supported by faith alone, whether by a scientist or anyone else.

Hi, deep thinker! Faith isn't something you aquire with logical thinking. You either have it or you don't. Sometimes you can be a faithful Christian and still loose faith. Sometimes the logical screams in our minds and we wonder if we're nuts! -----But then there is the explosive, amazing times when we just know! I love that intrigue! It's never boring to be a Christian unless you don't keep in motion. In the book of James it states" faith without works is dead." There is always more to learn, more to experience and more to feel, so we just live from moment to moment on the roller coaster hoping and having faith that the roller coaster car stays on track and we don't fall off! Good luck on your search for truth sweetie! God Bless!

i like the way miguel ruiz explains faith. he doesn't come out and say "this is faith", but I read his Four Agreements. everything we know is an agreement. every word, every concept, we at some point didn't know, but now form the basis of our perception... how we interact with each other, how we live our lives is all based on what we were told is true, so everything is a faith. now i think your word for faith is based on "where did we come from/ where are we going when we die?" is that the kind of faith you mean? well, the problem we might be having with this kind of faith is that it might be better termed "hope". IF there is a such thing as purpose and justice in our reality, such things as good and bad, then death is very bad. so we would HOPE that there is justice and that a 'good' person would receive justice, which would be 'life' right? the problem then becomes death itself, for who can come back to tell us what happens? that's what many faiths profess to do: tell us what happens AFTER. if you believe them, you tailor your life to meet the expectations of the best outcome for your life: continuation. if you don't believe them, what you do with your life reflects what you believe life is best used for NOW. sometimes this looks exactly the same. can you tell what my faith is?

I believe that what you are refering to is "blind" faith, the cousin to "love is blind".
Faith is a gift, plain and simple. You either accept it or not. Sometimes it comes in small packages, sometimes cumbersome.
For those that reason as you say, the faith is already there, in some remembered form that someone told them and has become a part of their reasoning process. Sometimes reasoning is overrated too, and can lead you in endless circles, for which man has invented valium and zoloft

Faith is a foundation only, you have to have understanding as well to shore up and support your beliefs whether you are a believer in the divine or not.

yes , faith is belief in things which there is no evidence for, but reason and logic are of limited value. faith has no limits. it is amazing what you can do that defies logic if you believe and have faith. even if it is in a rabbit's foot. it is the actual faith itself that does it, not what you have faith in. anything will do.
it is mind over matter
it is magic
but it works

The Era of Unity

All the signs of the times indicate that we are at the dawn of a new era in the history of mankind. Hitherto the young eagle of humanity has clung to the old aerie in the solid rock of selfishness and materialism. Its attempts to use its wings have been timid and tentative. It has had restless longings for 210 something still unattained. More and more it has been chafing in the confinement of the old dogmas and orthodoxies. But now the era of confinement is at an end, and it can launch on the wings of faith and reason into the higher realms of spiritual love and truth. It will no longer be earthbound as it was before its wings had grown, but will soar at will to the regions of wide outlook and glorious freedom. One thing is necessary, however, if its flight is to be sure and steady. Its wings must not only be strong, but they must act in perfect harmony and coordination. As ‘Abdu’l-Bahá says:—“It cannot fly with one wing alone. If it tries to fly with the wing of religion alone it will land in the slough of superstition, and if it tries to fly with the wing of science alone it will end in the dreary bog of materialism.”
Perfect harmony between religion and science is the sine qua non of the higher life for humanity. When that is achieved, and every child is trained not only in the study of the sciences, and arts, but equally in love to all mankind and in radiant acquiescence to the Will of God as revealed in the progress of evolution and the teachings of the Prophets, then and not till then, shall the Kingdom of God come and His Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven; then and not till then shall the Most Great Peace shed its blessings on the world.
“When religion,” says ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, “shorn of its superstitions, traditions and unintelligent dogmas, shows its conformity with science, then there will be a great unifying, cleansing force in the world, which will sweep before it all wars, disagreements, discords and struggles, and then will mankind be united in the power of the love of God.”

Faith is a two way road. There is genuine feedback that validates it beyond belief. The feedback, experienced as: intuition, psychic phenomena, strange coinidences, etc, isn't explainable. It is refutable, but not to those that have felt the feedback.

The Bible tells us that without faith, it is impossible to please GOD...but faith by itself can not save us.

Let me explain. It is not as much our faith that saves, but WHO we have faith in. I could have all the faith in the world that my good works will save me and I would end up in satan's hell. My faith has to be in JESUS for full payment for my sin.

John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
